Can't start AOE3 on Windows 7
Hey,
I know this is a common issue because I've been looking for ways to fix it for the past few hours, but I haven't been able to and I hope someone might be able to help me.

When I try playing AOE3 Complete collection (or either of the two expansions), the little loading square of the version I picked shows fine in the middle of my screen. Then my screen goes black, like the game is starting full-screen. Then my task bar shows back, and then my whole desktop, with the game minimised. If I try to click on it in my task bar, the computer just freezes and I need to open the task manager and close it.

I switched all games and launchers to windows xp 3, running as administrator, and it didn't work either from the files themselves or from steam (running steam as admin).
I tried putting them all in Vista 2 instead, still not working.
I clicked Disable visual themes, disable visual composition, disable display scaling, and applied every of these to each of the games and launchers for all users. The same thing still happens.

I don't know what else to try. I'm hoping someone knows what my problem is and can help me fix it.

Thanks.

UPDATE: my husband started trying to make it work too. He updated the drivers for the video card and now the problem is different. Before it even switches to the black screen, I get an error message:

[Main Instruction]
Age of Empires 3: Complete Collection has stopped working

[Content]
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

[Close program]

I tried looking it up on these forums but every kind of search returned nothing. The only thing I found was something on the AOE3 website saying you needed to uninstal it, then reinstal it without an internet connection, which of course is impossible on Steam.

Does anyone know how to fix that problem?

Just purchased AOE 3. Getting the same problem. Windows 64x bit, Radeon HD5770 video card. Loading screen starts up, screen goes black like its loading, i can hear the intro video but the screen is black. The cursor switches to the AOE cursor. Then the game minimizes. If I alt-tab back to it, it's still just black and eventually kicks me back to the desktop.

Maybe you can install it offline using a backup?Might be a useful workaround, but I haven't tested it.

Same problem as you two. It tabs me out before I can see anything but a black screen.

I'm not sure how that would work... or why... but I can give it a try tomorrow I guess. Still need to figure out how to do that though.

While not officially supported, many users are able to run Age of Empires 3 on Windows 7. Copies purchased through Steam or Impulse should not require any additional configuration.
Please see the following thread for information on running retail or GFWL versions of AOE3 on windows 7.

Thanks for your answer, but this isn't very helpful, as you're only telling me I should not require additional configuration. It still isn't working so... what do I do? I purchased the game through Steam the day of my first post and still can't run it.

EDIT: Oh, and I still can't figure out how to install it through Steam while offline.

UPDATE: I clicked on it today to start it, as I've done every day for the past week.
Today it worked. I don't know why.
I did uninstall it and reinstall it in French instead, but that was 5 days ago. I'm still mentioning it in case it helps someone else for some reason.
I guess it auto-updated and fixed itself in the end.

Update: Same deal. After reading the thread again today, I fired it up and it inexplicably works now.

I had the same issue...
Here's how I resolved it; hope it works for anyone with the same issue:

1. Lower your monitor's res to 1024 x 768
2. Start game; it may take a second to show up
3. Adjust the AOE:3 game res to your monitor's default res (for me it was 1920 x 1080)
4. Readjust your Monitor back to the default res

After doing that, I have had no problems playing.

THANK YOU. This worked. This needs to be copied and pasted elsewhere. I was starting to think I spent 39.99 for nothing.
