issue with the lounge door?

so i'm not sure exactly what i'm doing wrong, but i've been repeatedly entering the combo to the lounge door for like four in-game days now, and no matter what i do fail to open it. i have 3-4-2 written down next to me, i've tried three, five, and seven-second intervals between knocks, i've gotten the instructions from gillis several times, and it doesn't seem like anything is working. is there something i've missed?
(additionally: this might just be because my trackpad is finnicky, but occasionally while knocking my hand will perform the motion but there will be no 'knock' sound to accompany it. i've just been starting over after around twenty seconds whenever this happens because i don't know if it registers as a knock or not.)
