The Stanley Parable

I thought the best way to start the game was to know nothing about it?
That was what you said for the first game. And with all the videos and worded screenshots(which are quite funny) but doing it, you are kinda ruining the magic of the first game. We just downloaded it at random. I suggest when the game is released, remove trailers and make them more mysteryous or "story driven" ("Stanley was walking back from work when he stopped at a video game store. One game in particular looked interesting so he bought it.")

The current trailers have literally no content from the game. They are not spoilers in any way.

The trailer shows that the game messes with your mind.

The first one kind of gives you a look at how the narrator treats you, but it isn't completely obvious anyway. It's still mysterious enough, it's not like it's 3 minutes of random, cut up gameplay like a generic trailer.

Okay but remember that we had to greenlight this and eventually we plan to put a price tag on it. Both of those things are significantly harder to sell people on when we show them NOTHING. After playing the game it's easy to understand why you shouldn't know anything about it, but to someone who hasn't played it could easily just look like I'm lazy. Even with the content on the greenlight page a lot of people responded that they wouldn't endorse it if I didn't tell them more about the game.

It's a compromise. Yes, part of the mood and experience of the game will be slightly spoiled. But in exchange for that, far more people will hear about the game at all, there will be more marketing material for people to share around to get the word out (because without this, people would go on youtube to see a playthrough and COMPLETELY spoil it for themselves), and more people will be convinced to buy it than there would be otherwise. I know it isn't ideal, but it's working with the reality of the situation.

This kind of compromise has actually been one of the running themes of The Stanley Parable game itself, since the mod - how much you should you know, but how much should you not know? How much should be revealed, yet will keeping secrets benefit you or spark your curiosity, risking a painful death?
