What is a collect-a-ton game making it different than a 3D-platformer

you collect all sorts of stuff in all the levels you don't have to collect all but many things to get further in the game.look up banja-kazooie or super mario 64 (ohh and i didn't grow up with it either :D)

So lets say... I need to collect 5 rocks to continue or are it:

Collect 8 helmets to get to the ice level

Yes, only for Banjo-Kazooie it was puzzle pieces you got for doing various things in the level and notes that just lied around. You needed both to advance in the game, but never all of them.
