Upgrade gives ~15% more damage, and Pneumatic pumping for higher velocity bullets. Barrel slowly turns red when overheated
Pneumatically pump by holding right click, Takes 3 seconds per pump, and up to a max of 3 7 pumps, and up to 150% bullet velocity, aka enough to do headshot damage.
Level 3: 200 metal
Upgrade makes shotgun set enemies on fire, but does 75% less afterburn damage
-Shotgun overheats after approximately 18 shots in succession, without a 3 second break
-Overheating Causes roughly 1% of your health per 3 seconds while overheated

+ damage increases by 10% for each building you upgrade, maxes out at 120%
+ 30% faster projectile speed
cons:
- 40% damage penalty to start with
- 33% smaller clip size
That's actually a pretty good idea, but make it unable to upgrade for about 2 minutes between each upgrade. Also, levels should cost the same amount as it does for buildings to upgrade.
To upgrade your shotgun, open your PDA and select your shotgun. It upgrades in 5 seconds. You can't switch weapons while you're upgrading. A special animation plays while the Engineer upgrades his shotgun.
Level 1 (starting level)
Mirrors the stock Shotgun, but overheats the easiest (10 shots) and can cool down after a few seconds of no use. Overheating will cause you to lose 5 HP and wait 3 seconds before you're able to use it again. It also has a 10% faster reload speed.
Level 2 (200 metal)
+25% more pellets
+15% faster reload
+2 more shots to overheat (12 total)
Level 3 (200 metal)
+25% more pellets
+20% faster reload
+20% faster firing speed
+8 more shots to overheat (18 in total)
+19th shot inflicts after burn
-75% afterburn damage
-15% slower cooldown time
- +1 damage to self on overheat
With those additions to your idea, it'll be a useful and fun shotgun! It might need some more cons, though. The best way to know would be to use it with these abilities, but we obviously can't right now.
