Is there really no other way other than Early Access? Why not another release model that already has precedent? Take a look at the The Walking Dead Season 2. Right now they only has 1 episode out, but they still charge the price of the full package. The game is episodic, TellTale promised access to subsequent episodes with no additional charges other than the upfront price, and it's not under Early Access. That's a precedent right there, and if anything, World End Economica deserves to be released under this model than The Walking Dead Season 2 because unlike TWD S2, subsequent episodes of WEE has already been made, so the guarantee of an actual product is more solid than TWD S2 package.
Please look into this option. Early Access was created for a completely different purpose and it's getting negative stigma from every media outlet right now. Valve has created a precedent with TWD S2, they can't play double standards now.
We're actually 96% of the way to the top 100 of Steam Greenlight. About 4x faster than Narcissu 1st & 2nd. However if rate slows down we'll talk to Spicy Tails about doing review copies.
Steam early access might not be liked by the press but for beta testing the game which will be implemented in a new engine (I think it's unity, so linux support, yeah!) it does make sense.
BTW: Mangagamer is starting to port a few VNs to the unity engine, too. It would be cool if there will be some sort of VN-unity-engine-standard.
Speaking of Early Access, I suggest you guys follow some good practices for Early Access devs as discussed in this video:
- Discourage Steam users from buying while the game is in Early Access stage.
- Be transparent about what you want to implement in the new engine (aka a roadmap).
- Have a checkbox list in each update so players are aware how close to finished the new engine is.
- Have a link to a bug tracker/feature request page to emphasize testing purpose. Convenient for the testers to do their part, too.
This is all so that the game will avoid the common Early Access criticisms. Steam users, if this goes smoothly you can even reference this game as the only example of a proper use of Early Access for other games to follow. A boost of reputation is exactly what we need.
