WORLD END ECONOMiCA episode.01

Release details
So this title is quite a different release from Narcissu, I have some concerns.

1. Pricing: MangaGamer listed ep1 at $13, this is the price I can expect across all distribution services this game is on, right? Assuming no regional pricing, what's the chance of this title appearing on GOG and other distribution services?

2. Any pre-release hype that you can generate? Try sending review code to some mainstream review sites (like Destructoid, Eurogamer, RPS, Joystiq) and Youtubers? Gotta take chance so that they notice it. Keep bugging them enough and I'm sure they'll have to pay some attention.

3. Subsequent episodes: From the Narcissu page, I can tell that the future of Narcissu 3rd is not sealed yet. That's alright, the Narcissu trilogy was all standalone, but from playing the first 2 episodes of WEE, I can tell that this trilogy is not standalone at all. So what's the future for episode 2 and 3? Are you guys going to follow through the story to the end?

4. Greenlight going away: Not strictly related to this game, but how do you guys deal with Greenlight being put away by Valve in the future? They just announced this news at Steam Dev Days conference. What's the chance of episode 2 and 3 being on Steam with whatever Valve is going to replace Greenlight with?

Send a code to Kotaku, they have some readers and writers who are into anime and visual novels.

There is no point in piquing the interest of the people who are already interested to in the first place.

I am not sure what they are going to do. I really like the Greenlight Program, its leaving is going to hurt I would thing but there MUST be something else coming I am not that smart to figure it out though... Long Live the Queen was good VN but from the writer of Spice and Wolf I DO expect an awesome VN and I am going to want 1-3. Its going to be a wait and see to as what happens...

We will be posting a statement that'll address the questions. Please wait for it.

Already finished it about half a year ago and been waiting for ep2 and 3 since then. And yes, it IS ♥♥♥♥ing awesome. WIll definitely get it on Steam again just to support Spicy Tails. Btw. if you know anyone to bug, post them. I'll try to bug them as well and tell others about it so we can get something going ;)

Mangagamer released a Patch today, so is this the same translation or not?

Hi we've just posted a statement that covers most of the questions in this thread: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/updates/216264919/

Thanks for the answers. Though there's no answer for the sending review code suggestion, I hopes you guys do consider it.

Is there really no other way other than Early Access? Why not another release model that already has precedent? Take a look at the The Walking Dead Season 2. Right now they only has 1 episode out, but they still charge the price of the full package. The game is episodic, TellTale promised access to subsequent episodes with no additional charges other than the upfront price, and it's not under Early Access. That's a precedent right there, and if anything, World End Economica deserves to be released under this model than The Walking Dead Season 2 because unlike TWD S2, subsequent episodes of WEE has already been made, so the guarantee of an actual product is more solid than TWD S2 package.

Please look into this option. Early Access was created for a completely different purpose and it's getting negative stigma from every media outlet right now. Valve has created a precedent with TWD S2, they can't play double standards now.

We're planning a engine switch and do not want to use paying customers as beta testers. That is why we choose Early Access. It is entirely possible this WEE EP1 might change to "WEE Complete". Discussions are still underway so that change is not set in stone.

We're actually 96% of the way to the top 100 of Steam Greenlight. About 4x faster than Narcissu 1st & 2nd. However if rate slows down we'll talk to Spicy Tails about doing review copies.

I like the release model of telltale, but the downside is that you need some sort of DRM in your games to make sure that only paying customers are getting ingame episodic updates. That's realised with a ttg account. But if you could shift that DRM over to Steam and the connection with your Steam account (which you have to have in order to buy that game) there would be one DRM thingie less. Or you don't implement any DRM at all and release the episodes individual, as DLC, as free update or never.
Steam early access might not be liked by the press but for beta testing the game which will be implemented in a new engine (I think it's unity, so linux support, yeah!) it does make sense.

BTW: Mangagamer is starting to port a few VNs to the unity engine, too. It would be cool if there will be some sort of VN-unity-engine-standard.

We're considering open sourcing our engine for noncommercial usage but for commercial usage requiring you buy off the unity store. Still up in discussions for that one.

There's no need for a built-in DRM scheme in the game. A layer of Steam is already DRM by itself.

Speaking of Early Access, I suggest you guys follow some good practices for Early Access devs as discussed in this video:
- Discourage Steam users from buying while the game is in Early Access stage.
- Be transparent about what you want to implement in the new engine (aka a roadmap).
- Have a checkbox list in each update so players are aware how close to finished the new engine is.
- Have a link to a bug tracker/feature request page to emphasize testing purpose. Convenient for the testers to do their part, too.

This is all so that the game will avoid the common Early Access criticisms. Steam users, if this goes smoothly you can even reference this game as the only example of a proper use of Early Access for other games to follow. A boost of reputation is exactly what we need.

With Steam removing or replacing Greenlight might be some problems for future episodes of this game releasing on Steam, but this can be like Telltale games they just add episodes but not sell them separately, or if is possible add episodes as DLCs for current game( like some of these ppl said above), or let's hope Valve gives more possibilities to developers who already have one game on Steam, or ppl can just vote on Change.org website to make Valve add next episodes to Steam haha in the worst scenario.

We'll see what is possible in the next few weeks. Spicy Tails is in the process of releasing a Traditional Chinese version of episode 1 for this upcoming Chinese New Years.
