Hammerwatch

So... my impressions of the game. AKA The Wall Ramble.
I had literally not heard of this game at all until I went browsing through the most recent Greenlit items on Steam. Funny, as when I saw this game my brain INSTANTLY went to Realm of the Mad God (a fun game, sadly, weighed down by Permadeath, at least IMHO), and ClaDun x2. It was a top down hack and slash, and it presented itself well: Mindless chopping of enemies, and lots and lots of mobs to slash at.

This however... massively changes things up. Now, I really enjoyed Realm. I love little Dungeon Hunting games like these, where the game is less focused on stat comparing swords and whatnot... but this game just blows the frickin' lid off those two games. You don't get 1 or 2 enemies to fight at the start. You get a flock of bats and angry beetles in your face right off the bat. This game does NOT hold your hand, it's all about trial and error. It also does things... differently.

For instance, money is very important in this game. It's not so much fighting the monsters as it is grabbing the cash, so you can upgrade yourself, buy yourself into better training/abilities, and become a roving warmachine. The current 3 classes in the beta I played each had their own unique feel:

The Paladin went up and slashed stuff (and charged face first into piles of enemy. Lovable meathead).
The Ranger sat back and shot stuff (with arrow piercing, and fall off damage on his arrows the further away you are. He could also fart out bombs!).
The Wizard made Fireballs (and breathed fire. I'm under the assumption that he's Grandpa Bright Wizard, as his starting damage put Warhammer's fireshooters to shame).

Seriously though... I found it hard to pull myself away from the game. I'd say "Alright, I died on Pally. I'm only gonna try Ranger for a few minutes". Fast forward to a half hour later... you get the drill. I can only wonder how the Warlock handles, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the later upgrades do. The Ranger never got upgrades to how many arrows he could shoot (at least, not the first upgrade station), and the Warrior got no defense buffs. Hopefully these are rectified.

The long term is also up for question. Will we see more classes? I had really expected to see a close range, high speed DPS machine, or some dagger thrower that'd loose 3 daggers in different directions, mixing the traits of Ranger (ranged piercing) and Mage (area damage), but having their own unique spin to them (group together almost like a shotgun blast that spreads over range).

Overall though, I really enjoyed this little title, though I did leave with a few questions. Since there's a Hardcore mode, does this mean that we keep our characters after death, and get sent back to the start of the castle? Or is it more Diablo esque, constantly dying, but getting returned to a check point? The fact there are lives in this game makes me wonder, but frankly, I like both systems, so it really doesn't matter all that much too me.

Overall, I do know this is a day 1 purchase for me, no matter what, as the tension the game brought with each fight was unlike anything I've felt in recent games. To the Devs: Very well done, and I look forward to the release of your game. This will be one of the few titles I won't be waiting to go on sale before I purchase, and that's saying something.

You Sure You Just Don't Suck At These Types Of Games? Because From What I Saw All You Do Is Keep Pressing The Attack Button And Nothing Can Touch You...The Wizard & Archer Makes It Even Easier Because Of The Range...Probally could play it with your eyes closed.

Did you even play the game passed the first 30 seconds? The DPS is already off the chart especially as a paladin.

Actually, I played the game up to the 3rd level, then quit so I wouldn't burn out. Apparently, you never made it past the 1st level, because on the 2nd and 3rd you start getting enemies that can shoot +3 projectiles, and entire swarms of them. It takes several swings of your weapon to kill them, and you can rapidly be overrun. If you try to play eyes closed, you will be EATEN ALIVE.

It sounds like you're one of those self-styled "super hardcore players". They've already said there are various difficulties, AND hardcore mode, so you should get exactly what you want out of this game. For me, this game is absolutely amazing, and I will be supporting it with a one day purchase. It brought fun and RPG elements into a game, without ripping off Diablo. It did it's own thing, and it does it ridiculously well.
