Mortal Online: The Awakening

New players review, try it before you buy it!
For starters I am from north america, the server is in europe so this could have had a impact on my gameplay. I only played the game for 2 days as well so this is from a limited prospective.

The title of this review is: BUGS, lots of them.

Sound 4/10: Nothing special, not bad or good.

Graphics (turned all the way up) 6/10: The world looks decent although not a ton of detail. Lots of just open area's of nothing. The lighting is good, night time you cant see a damn thing and I could not find a way to turn up the in game brightness. Character detail is meh. Most of the monsters I have seen were decent looking but not on par with a 2012 game.

Combat 5/10: I only tried out melee combat since everyone said warrior's are the way to go for solo pvp. Best way I can describe melee combat is rock em sock em robots. When you left click with mouse to swing, you will swing a few different ways and its random (This statement is false, found out you can change the direction you attck like I said this reveiw is from a person who played 2 days). You can press ALT plus left click to thrust. Thrusting was the best looking attack animation and the swings look slopy and hit at random.

You can block attacks which is basic stuff. When you are attacked by a enemy monster most just make a lunge forward motion then go back a step or two then repeat the process. I did not see anyting ground breaking or different from other mmos I have played.

Crafting and gathering 7/10: This is the one thing I had fun doing while playing this game which is odd because normally I hate gathering and crafting. Maybe because its the only part of the game that seems to be complete but still no different from most MMO's out there.

You can cut wood which looks like you are chopping at a tree that never falls down until the still standing tree runs out of resources. Mining works the same way except with rocks which are few and far away. To craft a item you use something like workbench ect and add said items to make stuff. All basic stuff, the good thing is it all seems to work right!

Lore and quests 1/10: I dont think this game was made to have a good story or vast amounts of quests. The newbie quest is horrible and even doing it for the first time, I wanted to skip ahead and just get on with playing the game.

PvP 3/10: This is what this game was made for......I think. You start off as innocent and if you attack someone you can expect to get attacked by guards. Hate games with this system, makes people safe and everyone sits around crafting all day next to guards. Once outside of the city area's if you are solo and looking for a fight you can run around for a long time before you find someone.

I never did get to group vs groups style combat since I like the lonewolf style of pvp. But this game does not fit into that style of gameplay. So maybe the group battles are really great but I dont enjoy zerg vs zerg because the biggest zerg wins.

Overall gameplay 4/10: The wost part about MO is the bugs. I get the vets all know how to avoid most of them but for a new player they drive you nuts. Want to goto a vendor and sell that wood you chopped for 2 hours? Place it in the sell menue, sell it and.....Get nothing in return. Sometimes you get paid for the item other times you dont. Want to use the bank, well you have everyone, their donkey, and their dog in the way.

Now there is still lots I have yet to see in MO, and maybe had I tried to stick it out for a few months and see all the content I would rate it higher. Fact is though after a few days I cant convince myself to log in. I am happy its free to play and that I voted for it for greenlight because for people with little money to play games they can still play a decent MMORPG.

But as for me I would rather pay money and play finished games without amatuerish bugs. I would also suggest MO turn down their subscription fee. Why would you pay 15$ a month for a game with many bugs, and no really great features when there are other better games with the same fee on the market.

TO SUM IT ALL UP: If you cant afford to play pay to play MMORPG's this is a decent free option. If you are looking to play a good game and willing to pay a fee, try it for free first. chances are you will pay to play something other than MO.

i see your point but you missed the best part of MO. the pvp is far more than you think, but obviously you couldn't see it as a new player (the is swing is not "random" at all my friend etc hahaha), stay longer, ask around, enter in a guild. only then you can understand fully what mortal is all about.
realnaste 24 dec 2012 om 3:43vm
"you will swing a few different ways and its random.- wrong. You decide from which direction you swing and block. This is the base of perfect blocking and counter attacks in pvp. You might want to edit that, since it is misleading and only proves you did not learn how to play.

"Crafting (...)still no different from most MMO's out there."- Most mmos have a simplistic crafting based on recipes, where a set list of arbitrary items of certain quantity give you a set item from a very limited list. MOs crafting does not work like that and thus does not work like in most mmos.

Rest seems ok.

Yeah like I said though this reveiw is from a person who only played for 2 days. So I am not a MO expert by any means. I did not play long enough to figure out the combat and how it works. Which could be a injustice to the game but at the same time I dont want to play or figure out the great aspects of MO simply because of the bugs you deal with on the way to getting to the core of the gameplay.

so you made a sort of noob review for noobs i guess. no offence in this mate, but i don't see how it could be usefull to anyone

Point is, if I am a noob or actually stuck around to play, the bugs kill this game either way. If you have no money its a decent free mmorpg to kill the time with. If you have money, there is much better quality games without amatuer bugs that should not be in a 3 year old pay to play game.

yeah for the bug part i totally agree. for the other part i can't, because in the sandbox area there are only a few more game worth trying (maybe only eve online and UO). mortal is not a simple mmorpg, is a sandbox (the others are called themepark, if you don't know the difference please search more info elsewhere), that's the big difference and that's why many pay to play, instead of simply switching to guild wars 2 or some other ♥♥♥♥.

Trust me, if there were a game that gives this list of features, but without bugs, no one would play MO right now with all it's issues. Anyway- after that edit it's a fair "first impressions" review of a typical gamer :)

I get you guys are a tight comunity of hardcore, greif, ffa, sandbox gamers and there are not many games on the market in that genre.

This game has many features of UO (which I am a fan of) but the bugs really distract me from enjoy the finer aspects of the game.

I am not trying to discredit MO because I hope it does great and fixes the problems because as many of you said the market for this genre is slim to none. I still dont regret voteing for this game.

But unfortunatly for now I wont be playing MO but who knows they clean up these bugs and I would be more than happy to devote time to this game to enjoy those great features.

Guilds are what make MO. I thought this game was awful until i got involved in the LOC, then it was instantly one of my favorite games of all time.

Got any more issues to argue ?

Check out Pathfinder Online Kickstarter. It ends this weekend and will be a close race to the goal. It looks to have a chance at being the fantasy sandbox we have been waiting for. It is also being developed by a real team of professionals with deep roots in the tabletop RPG as well as online MMOs. It will draw a lot from Eve as well as that is where the CEO is from.

CROWDFORGING BABY!

I dont understand why you make a review of a game you almost don't know. Their's probably toons of players that played this game long and stopped because of bugs or other problems like that, just let those guys express their opinion it will be much more interesting for everyone (I dont say you need to like the game to make a review, you just need to know it).

Making a review of an Sandbox MMO after 2 days of gametime feels like a troll to me.

And by saying a lot of false things (that makes me think that you may haven't even tried the game) I don't see how your review could help a possible buyer decide if he should purchase Mortal Online nor a possible voter for greenlight.

Because it only takes 2 days to understand the game is full of game breaking bugs. I did not have to play for years to find them, I found them almost instantly. The game might be amazing, but those bugs were enough for me to move on.

So whats the point in the review, well if this gets on steam I see many people quiting within the first week and the devs really should polish out the bugs before leting it loose to steam. It does not take years of playing to realize that.

I still wish MO luck and look forward to a non alpha version of the game but timing is everything on steam and if it makes it on steam now then I see it hurting the game more than anything.
Raziel 20 jan 2013 om 5:11nm
The actual players won't leave because it goes live on steam. Steam can only bring fresh blood into the game. If the new players leave shortly after install it will be sad but maybe understandable, if they don't, then cool more people to kill !

In anycase going live on steam can only help this small company get some "free" advertising, something they can't afford otherwise.

Also yes, the game has bugs, but due to his "unique" gameplay and style many players can't try an other game to get the same kind of amusement, so they have to stick with MO and hope for it to get better and pray for the devs to find money to fix it.

But nontheless this game is great, has a lot of potential and can become a major Sandbox thanks to Steam.

Good day sir
