Sexual content in games
Read an article 'Valve Pulls Sex Game From Steam Greenlight' on Tom's HArdware.

Would you agree that anyone tolerating violent themes but not sexual themes in games and media is a hypocrite? In fact, even treating sex and violence even-handedly doesn't make one bit of sense, other than the fact that sexual repression is a millenia-old political and social tool to keep people in line, dissatisfied, producing and consuming, but really has no rationale otherwise.

Why does Steam pull games that contain mild sexual content but allows those with extreme violence?

I agree that the position of sex being worse than violence is a very messed up one that needs to change and I am very disappointed that Valve follows that distorted mindset and will not allow erotic games on Steam while they continue to allow an uncountable number of violent games on Steam, including their own.

I personally don't play erotic games, but I see it like this. Either Valve allows erotic games to be added to the Steam store or they should pull all violent games from their store. Which would probably be the vast majority of games. If they do neither of these things, then they are really messed up in their views.

Americans are odd when it comes to sex & violence. Seriously odd. No pun intended, but they are extremely odd in that regard.

One possible reason that comes to mind is regulation. For whatever reason violent content is tolerated, but the only option Steam (and other content providers) would have is banning violent games as well, instead of allowing those with sexual content.

What is the point of having sex in games? There's more than enough outlet for all that all over the internet already without having to resort to simulations for freakos that can't get a date. Can't you just be happy with just shooting some alien nasty in the face? Or isn't that the sort of "shooting" you're into.. Heh. (sry bad pun, couldn't resist ; ) )

Might as well ask what's the point of violence if you can watch violent movies, or join the military and kill people the socially approved way.

It's a matter of principle, when Valve (or a regulator) decides certain things are not okay, they are taking away a piece of our freedom. The difference between the US and say North Korea is how many of those freedoms have been taken away.

My position is, unless there is a very compelling reason to ban something, it should be allowed.

mindless violence and murder thats all good we will be happy to sell you that , sex and erotica thats blasphemy and ye shall burn in the pits of hell for it ))

Its not just steam its society in America and some of europe , brainwashed in to thinking mindless violence amd murder is entertainment but two humans makeing love are talking about it is some how wrong as entertainment and is to be shamed apon ,Its all about religon and power and keeping the masses under control

"Taking away a piece of our freedom"? I reckon there a bigger freedom issues at stake, than worrying whether or not we can experience explicit sexual content in games. Nah I can't agree with this. But does raise the question of whether this is really about freedom, or more about morality, common sense and just plain old simple decency. Would you want your kids playing such games for entertainment? I doubt any sane person would. Violence is one thing, but sex is an entirely different shabang altogether. One that, for my part, is neither wanted or welcome in the industry.

lol is it that big a deal...

blowing crap up and turning people into red mist is fun and exciting. sex is sex. see I'm not a 13 year old so.... you know. Sex. Ok....

I mean if you really need to see it, there's plenty of free ways to go about it, and you get a, heh, lot more than you would in a game.... So really... who the hell cares?

quote from XIV the poster above
" Violence is one thing, but sex is an entirely different shabang altogether"

He just summed up the problem in 12 words . People think violemce and murder are okay as forms of entertainment , but sex is bad and another thing all together . Happy for his kids to play games with mass murder and violence and thhinks ADULTS should not have the freedom of choice to play what they want , Its 2012 not 1812

I would like to see more naked bodies in games + ESRB rates and that kind of things are ♥♥♥♥♥. No one keep those ratings and rules. 12- years old play games who are 13+. No one can stop them!

why though? just for the hell of it?

if it fits in context, adds to the plot and develops character then sure, why not. but you didn't say that. you said you just wanted more. so why exactly?

Steam sells The Witcher 2, which has sexual content that's only a few steps away from explicit, and I'm pretty sure there's at least a few other games on here just like it, so they clearly have no problem with such content. It sounds like they just draw the line at erotica games in which the only goal is sex. I think a parallel in violence would be, like, games in which you play a serial killer and the only objective is to find ways to graphically murder nubile college students or something like that. I'm willing to bet Steam wouldn't care to host that kind of game, either. That seems fair enough to me.

just go to nexus for skyrim and fallout and look at the most popular mods and the numbers speak for them self ,Lots of ADULT gamers like some form of erotica in there games . Its odd because you would think that sex was the major problem in the world now. its not its greed murder violence and religon all things steam is happy for us and are kids to play ))) Its all about religon power fear control

No not really. Despite whatever is said. Where there is a market. There will always be someone there to cater for that market. Like the porno biz, if folk are sad enough that they want this level of degeneracy in their lives. There will always be people out there who will pander to that demand, despite the moral consequences. And if the above posters are happy to have the lines between sex and love, greyed so they can simultaneously hold a joypad in one hand, and their johnsons in the other, who am i to argue? Each to their own I guess. But it don't sound like any notion of real love that I am familar with. Looks like we're agreeing to disagree on this one kids.

Well speaking as an adult, I can say that I have no problem with sexual content in my games, at least not on principle only.

What I DO have an issue with, is throwing it in there just for the hell of it, when it adds nothing of substance to the game.

As for Skyrim and Fallout... you're really calling them adults? lol... The skins may be developed by adults (arguably...), but the target and the majority of the ones going crazy for it fall in the 13-20 crowd (and, no offense if you fall in this catagory, but just because someone has hit 18 doesn't mean they are an adult in any meaning of the word outside a legal document...)
