Community Level Thumbnail
Is it possible to change the default "Community Level" thumbnail to a custom image? If so, how does one go about that?

Yes, it's possible to change the thumbnail!

There are several methods:

1/ USING THE SCREENSHOT TOOLS:

a/ When submitting your level, the game will ask you if you want to take a screenshot

b/ Then the level will open, in a special mode. You're not controlling the Tetrobot but the camera, and need to press a key to trigger the screenshot.

c/ It's possible that the screenshot is not triggered, for various reasons. If so, you can still put the game in Pause, and go back in the Community menu from here.

2/ USING AN OVERRIDING IMAGE

You can put an image named "custom_level_override.jpg" in your Community folder (on Windows by default the folder is located in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\blocks that matter\Community"

If you want a template image, you can copy/paste the default one called "custom_level.jpg" and situated in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\blocks that matter\default_resources\thumbnail".

If you refuse to take screenshot in the game when prompted, then this "custom_level_override.jpg" will be used (if existing). If not, then the "custom_level.jpg" will be used!

3/ USING TOOLS ON THE ITEM WORKSHOP PAGE

If you're are the owner of an item on the Workshop, (like http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=92710938&searchtext=), then you have access to some tools of the right.

One of them is "Add/edit images & videos". With that you will able to browse your computer to upload any image!
