Polycount in 3ds Max - Polygons or Triangles?
In the official FAQ it says:

Q: What are the polycount limits on my item?
A: Keep the polycount similar to what's already in the game. Try to keep hats under 1,000 polygons, and weapons under 6,500.

In 3ds Max, should I be keeping an eye on the number of triangles or polygons? I have a feeling it's triangles but if someone knows for sure, that would be great.

I still can't find a definitive answer for this and I don't want to go over the max limits.

Always triangles. Polygon used to be the default term for triangles before "polygon" became a thing in 3D packages. Anyone who has modeled for a long time will often say polygons and mean triangles.
