Anything close to it?
Ironically, it may be what I'm looking for, though, don't know about horses...
Sadly, I don't know of any games like Monster Rancher. Which is too bad, the series was quite good... For that matter, I wouldn't mind seeing the MR series ported to the PC.
What made it great was the depth of strategy in raising your monster, with various strengths and weaknesses of stats. There's income management, secret unlockable monsters, exploration to find more secret stuff, etc.
Monsters having a limited life span meant you may need to freeze it to create your 2nd or 3rd generation monster, so that they will start with higher stats and save the time to train them.
I think a 2D version of the game would still be fun to play, and I hope that a developer considers making this.
as a developer, 2D is not "easier to make" than 3D. coding a 3D *engine* is harder than coding a 2D engine, but if you use a pre-made engine (like UDK, unity, etc.) then making a 3D game is not any harder than making a 2D one. most games (for both AAA and indie) use pre-made engines rather than rolling out a new engine for each game.
this difference is mainly in that 3D games require 3D artists, and 2D games require 2D artists, and there are more 2D artists than 3D artists, because 3D modeling is a specialized skill that fewer people know how to do (2D artists are more common because it's the more natural way that people normally draw, and it's what most artists are taught how to do in art schools). in other words, it's easier to find someone you know who is good at drawing 2D art than good at 3D modeling and animation.
