Visual Novels on steam
Now I know some of you are hating on visual novels because most you see are some mushy plot romance or something like that, but honestly some are actually have good plot, and you should give some a chance (like higurashi, this one fellow thought it was romance, dam you were spot on *sarcasm*)

There are already some VNs on Steam but you kinda very much need to prove yourself as capable before anyone, Greenlight voters included, will take you seriously.

i think a problem is that it's harder to "prove" that a visual novel is good through screenshots and video than with most other genres. good stories often don't seem like anything special in short bits and excerpts, it takes time to suck you in. so it'd need some really good art and need to look like it wasn't made in ren'py (nothing against the ren'py engine, but they all tend to feel very similar)

The only reason you should dislike playing a Visual Novel is if you really hate reading, and since your reading this right now it is very unlikly you dislike reading. I would LOVE to see something like Ever 17 coming onto steam or any Visual Novel of such quality. A lot of them have really amazing stories and are a lot more than some simple 'smut' game that many believe them to be.

But I agree that its hard to judge a VN without hearing from others. Which is exactly what the comments feature should be used for on a games page. If I see a note worthy VN go onto steam I will Up vote it but for some random VN I have never heard of I will probably not even look into it and I love VN's.

Well that's a strange statement. So everyone who loves reading also loves the artstyle most visual novels use?

You would be amazed how many people are incapable of understanding this logic.

WoW is full of people spamming chat channels with "Hey, what am I supposed to do with (insert random quest)?" The usual reply ("Hey, read the quest!") is so very often replied with "I don't wanna read!" and variations thereof.

Personally, I'd welcome VNs on Steam, even a whole section devoted to them. I'm just not sure how many will make it through Greenlight, given the average user.

This seems an appropriate time to remind people that Users don't read. Anything.

We already have Analogue: A Hate Story on Steam, so it seems VNs are allowed as long as they're not too sexual.

As for asking us to give VNs a chance...look at my avatar. :P

I´m with you guys in here.

There is more about it then only sex or romance in VNs, Analogue was already mentioned and just recently we got "To the Moon". So please make others understand that they´re more about awesome storytelling and emotions! ;_;

I've tried VNs years ago, and just didn't think they were for me. The stories and genres they covered just didn't interest me. I still feel like it wouldn't hurt to have them on Steam. Visual Novels are a fairly small niche of games, especially in the west, and unfortunately Greenlight isn't ideal for niche games. The way Greenlight works currently, it seems games need to involve zombies or Slenderman to rise to the top.

Therefore, someone make a VN game involving Slenderman and zombies. It'll hook in the more mainstream users, and hopefully encourage them to try more in the genre ._.b

I like visual novels, so I'm perfectly content to vote for them. They are at a bit of a disadvantage as so much depends on the storyline, which is the hardest aspect to show off in images and description.

please point me in the direction in the best VN on greenlight right now and I will happily upvote, favorite, suscribe, retweet, post the gran, tatoo my chest, plaster the sidewalks, and banksy the bridge.

So far 'Higurashi When They Cry' is at 2% If any VN gets through Greenlit I'm hoping it'll be that one.

Considering it has been adapted into comics, novels, live action films, anime as well as several ports and expansions on console and handheld systems. The size of the series and its popularity alone will hopefully lead to Steam taking an interest in it. (I hope...)

That and I want to play it! XD

It's a sad thing that visuals novels get overlooked so much, because many of them have incredible storylines, like higurashi, umineko, muv-luv:alternative, corpse party, 999, ever17 and to the moon to name a few.

They do read when the purpose of the piece of softare is reading. E-books sell quite well.

I also think there's a culture barrier here. People from USA, UK, Germany and France who are used to dubbed movies (or in the case of USA, preferably only native movies) are less likely to like having to read the text in a visual novel, whereas those from other countries which are used to and love subtitled movies are very familiar with the concept, and far more accepting of visual novels.

I say "Bring 'em on". But let those who actually OWN a game be able vote what's crap even after release -- that goes for other games too.
