With the new itemtest beta, the hardest part of the process is making the model. Importing used to be a real pain for new item makers, but it has been made far easier.
Just start making things in your 3d application of choice, there really is no alternative to practice. Your first creations will look bad, everyones first creations look bad. Just take each model as a learning experience and you should be creating good quality items in a few months.
