Nudity in Steam Games
I am a new game developer, having founded my company earlier this year. I am currently working on a couple of projects, but I am considering starting working on an anime-themed dating sim later this year. This is a popular genre in Japan, but isn't widely available in the west and unheard of on Steam.

I am fine with making most interactions seem platonic in the game, sort of like how LovePlus was for the Nintendo DS. Going beyond that might not be well received by Valve, or for that matter, Apple or Google. As for Valve/Steam though, does anybody have any idea of what's allowed? Perhaps humorous panty shots, or revealing cleavage? This might allow for funny dialogue, which may be difficult to achieve in a strictly "safe" dating game. Obviously, I know that sex would be clamped down on, and I assume full breast art as well. I think it's a shame that something very softcore might have to go through a lot of hoops if it's possible at all, whereas overused profanity and extreme violence are allowed in video games. We interact with girls and see their bodies in the real world so softcore content is realistic. We don't rip spines out of people's mouths though.

There are dozens of these on Greenlight already.
Personally I don't think we need any more.

Hmm, you're right. Still, I've wanted to make a game like this. Some of the games I can see don't appear to have a narrative, with poor graphics, etc. I can understand your reservations, but thanks for notifying me about it.

That said, I'd like to return to the discussion of Valve's nudity rules/regulations.

If your game would be rated Adults Only, you don't stand much of a chance of getting it on Steam.

I'm not making a hentai game.

Nobody said you were, I just told you what the general guideline would be. If your game would get an AO rating from the ESRB, then you'd not stand much of any chance of Valve picking it up. If not, then it'd probably be fine here, assuming it can get past Greenlight. Dating sims don't tend to generate much interest here.

Sadly nudity is one of those things that sets off a lot of alarm bells with a lot of people, it would be tricky to get a game though to Steam with any nudity. A few games get away with topless women that are just there for the aesthetics or nudity that is just a very small part of the game, but those are usually the AAA games that have big publishers backing them up, you'd be hard pressed to get away with it as an indie developer.

My game is much worse off than whatever yours would have in it simply because mine is about porn addiction.

There's really not even nudity in mine. You see 2 side boobs (one of them is a fractal) and a medical-like drawing of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ plus a fractal ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

You should be fine to submit just expect people to completely blow up.

Reference: See my game if you'd like.

No... that is not the same thing or worse....
Haven't you chosen to not include nudity just for the sake of being safe?

Fact:

Only if you have a huge ♥♥♥ company with a huge ♥♥♥ amount of money on your side (EA, Ubisoft etc.), nudity won´t be allowed.

Normally Steam´s opion is: "Our 10 year old children are allowed to cut of limps and drink the blood of their virtual victims but if they see a nipple, then our poor children will get brain cancer, become criminals and eventuelly suffer a painful death. All because of the nipple in the Steam game."

That´s Steam´s opion. Sorry to tell you the harsh truth OP.

No, there is nudity in my product, I said that.

Just much less than say, <insert M-rated game here>.

Although my game would still be M-Rated because it has some of the most controversial topics discussed even outside of porn addiction.

There are no 10 year olds on steam, according to the rules. The youngest kid here is 13, according to the rules. They don't have to qonsider 10 year olds, according to the rules.

So indies can have nudity in their games then? Is that what you are saying?

oh. sorry i misunderstood.
Have you talked to Valve about this already then or are you just going by that they have not yet taken any acton towards your Greenlight page?
I mean technically you haven't been accepted yet so how do you know what will happen?

@Mantis: If you are unsure better skipp it imo.
Is it nudity for the sake of nudity? Is it necessary for the plot? Can you censor it?
Have you tried posting this on the greenlight dev forum or in some way tried to contact Valve? I'm not sure how much help random Steam users will be.

The fact I submitted this in both concepts and on the legit greenlight page makes me assume Valve is fine with it. If they weren't they'd be shooting themselves in the foot.

There are games on Steam about alcohol addiction, depression, nazis, and so on.

If Valve drew the line on porn addiction I'm sure I can tip off a few news sites and get Valve some bad press.

I'm not against Valve. I'm just pointing out facts if they did take action against my product. Legally speaking a 5 year old could play my game. There's nothing besides controversial topics in there, nothing illegal or against Valve's policies.

I've had users tell me that they reported my product. That was within the first 3 days. Pretty sure Valve would of done something about something like my product a little quicker.

The user was using the "muh children" and "muh Steam" arguments.

As if it's my job to care about your kids and your job to decide what products are not allowed on Steam.

The guy didn't even know Steam allowed M-rated titles. Goes to show the standard of voters on Steam Greenlight.
