Vive Game Jams

30 June - Chet
We tweeted it out last week, but time to officially mention - we will be supporting a VR Game Jam at Playhubs London UK on July 11-12 with a public viewing event the night of July 13. This is a great place for developers to get their hands on the Vive and work in a group setting with Valve, Unity and Epic in attendance.

We will also be supporting a VR Game Jam on July 18-19th in Vancouver Canada, more information to come for this one. You can always follow us on Twitter for the latest information.

We continue to ship HTC Vive Developer Editions to developers around the globe. If you signed up and saw the confirmation message on the signup page, then we received your information. If you haven’t signed up – go here. Before we ship, you will get a confirmation email including shipping information. We are excited to see and play what everyone has been working on.

HTC Vive Developer Edition Setup Manual

8 June - augusta

While shipping the HTC Vive Developer Editions, people were asking to see the complete manual. So in case blurry images posted by developers wasn't enough, here is the complete PDF. Just remember, this is for the developer edition only. There will be a few changes and additions for the consumer edition coming later this year and this document will continue to be updated based on developer feedback.

Vive Developer Editions are Shipping

5 June - Chet
This week, we have started shipping the Vive Developer Editions. This first wave includes a wide range of developers from major movie studios, triple A developers, to small indie teams working on their first title. We will continue to ship to additional developers through the spring and summer.

In the box is a headset, 2 Lighthouse base stations, 2 wireless Steam VR controllers, various cables, instructions, and everything else needed to get started. This will allow developers to target the same system consumers will have in their homes later this year.

Remember, while you will need to receive a Developer Edition to post in the Steam VR Hardware Group, the entire community is invited to read and follow along with the developers as they create great virtual reality experiences.

OpenVR SDK Now Available

30 April - Programmer Joe
Applications are now able to access SteamVR hardware using the new OpenVR SDK. The SDK is available for download here. It provides support for the HTC Vive Developer Edition, including the SteamVR controller and Lighthouse. See the release notes to learn what has changed from the Steamworks VR. The SDK also includes new documentation and samples.

Along with the OpenVR SDK support has been added to support Unity via the SteamVR Unity Plugin and native SteamVR support in Unreal 4.8. Both will be available soon.

This SDK release is the next step toward the first major Developer Edition shipment. If you have not yet applied to receive a Developer Edition, there is still time.

Sign Up for the HTC Vive Developer Edition Is Now Available

21 April - Chet

The sign up form for the HTC Vive Developer Edition is now open. Please use this venue to tell us about your team and project. These submissions will be used in the selection process for developer distribution, which will begin later this spring and continue through summer.

Our goal is to support as many VR content creators as possible and, to that end, we will be distributing dev kits continually, with new units going out every couple weeks. However, supplies may be limited.

The Developer Edition is currently not for sale. It will be available to developers free of charge. Commercial units will be available at a later date this year.

In addition to the sign up pages, the SteamVR Developer Community and general SteamVR discussion pages are now available.

The Steam VR Developer Community is for developers with an HTC Vive Developer Edition kit. This Community will be publically visible, so even if you have not received a dev kit, you can read the messages and follow along with development. Posting is for active developers only, so that the information is relevant to developers who are using the same dev kit, sharing their knowledge and helping us work through improvements.

The general SteamVR discussion group is for all things virtual reality and Steam related including other hardware and experiences not part of the Vive program. Everyone is welcome to read and post in this group.
