The Gate
November 27, 2013 - Spicy Horse Games

A big "Thank You!" to everyone who has voted for The Gate so far. As a small, indie development studio we really appreciate your support and feedback. If you have questions about our games, our studio, or our approach to design and monetization, please ask. We believe in full transparency and open communication with our audience. On that note...

Lots of people asking for more details about the game mechanics and for a Beta launch date. All these questions can be answered in one simple way: GO PLAY THE GAME!

But before you do that... please take a minute to read the following:

The Gate, as we're launching here on Steam, will be a full-blown client-install version, not a web version. That means it'll be multi-hundred megabytes of content, packed with high fidelity 3D assets and visual effects, and running on PC, Mac and Linux as a native install. It will be presented with a one-time, low price, purchase fee that grants you a ton of start-up goodies in-game.

The version you can play today is a web version, which is still beautiful, but won't hold a candle to the full visual glory of the client install version here on Steam. Please, keep this in mind while playing :)

Also, please try to keep an open mind about the fact that this is a multi-platform game. Yes, it's going to be available on iOS and Android devices. And yes, you'll see that the web version is on a website most of you associate with (crappy) casual web games. Please, don't let this distract from the fact that The Gate is the furthest thing from traditional casual mobile/web games.

Why do we bother to explain all this? Because we're trying to push the boundaries here... we're trying to bring high-quality, 3D-gaming content to places it's never been. This is how the little indie studios break away from the monopoly of traditional publishing controlled by the EA's and Activision's of the world. And that's not a bad thing, is it?

Whew. So... now all that's been said, we'll STFU so you can get on with playing the game:

Play it RIGHT NOW by following THIS LINK.

Once you've played, let us know what you think. And if you like, it, give it a YES vote!

Thank you, from the entire team at Spicy Horse!

Hi everyone

Thanks for all the comments and questions about The Gate, there seems to be a couple of comments that keep cropping up though, so let's address them.

"Mobile game for pc?"
Actually it's not. It was developed jointly for mobile and PC simultaneously. Using the power of Unity 3D, the game is literally brimming with high poly models, VFX and stunning art.
The fact that a game like this CAN be brought to mobile just shows how far that platform has come, but if you're just expecting a game with no depth to be played in 5 minute chunks then that's absolutely NOT what The Gate is.

This is traditionally a tricky one to answer as you can never please all the people all of the time. But in a nutshell, if you're asking if you can pay to get good stuff, then yes you can, you can pay to get good cards, and all the other "buffs" in the game.
But you can also get all the good stuff in the game for FREE too by playing. And that DOES include the highest rarity gold cards.
This is the mindset we generally have at Spicy Horse. Give the customer choice. The choice to pay or the choice to play without restricting the rewards for either player.

"Yawn.. another CCG"
Yes and no. The Gate mixes the elements of CCG and RTS together. So you are collecting cards and improving them and evolving them and choosing your deck etc etc.. but also you have full control of the battles too.
You simply click and drag to move or attack and use the many battle skills that are available. Use your knowledge of which enemies belong to which element to gain an advantage in battle....or you know what.... just press the auto button and have the battles played for you.

So, if you'd like to know any more about The Gate, then just keep the comments coming, we'll do our best to address every concern and question you have.
