Our first public alpha went live on Friday, and we’ve just published our first patch (of many!) If you’re interested in trying out some of the game so far, and contributing to its future direction and development, check out our page on Steam.

Letting our undead baby out into the wild has been exciting, a little terrifying, and most of all amazing as we watch players come up with creative strategies or crazy antics in the alphaTest map. We’re also taking feedback of all stripes to heart!

The Undead Overlord is alive! Or, at least - you know . . . undead! Prepare yourself, because come July 18th the horde will rise and you can be among the first to chow down on some unsuspecting humans.

Undead Overlord on the Steam Store

Yes, it’s true - the game has been successfully passed through the cogs by the zombie-loving folks at Valve, and we’re proud to announce that our Alpha1 milestone will be available on Steam Early Access later this month. Undead Overlord was originally Greenlit by the community last fall - after just over a month’s worth of voting. Since then, we've been working like mad to provide a deliciously playable version for our hungry fans.

You all know about Beta software. Well . . . Alpha comes before Beta, so the alpha release is a first taste that's still incomplete, and full of crawling bugs and creeping inconsistencies that we haven't had time to stomp out just yet. But you can help us do the stomping, and have some fun in the process!

Mayhem has never tasted so good.

Undead Overlord puts you in charge of the zombie horde. You become the driving force behind the zombie apocalypse. Will you bring civilization to its knees, or will you be driven back by pestilent human resistance?

Alpha1 lets you experience the beginnings of the reign of the Undead Overlord with the first three story missions, a skirmish map, and a special alphaTest map available to those who take part in the game’s Early Access program. Play the game like you're riding a bucking bronco - ride that sucker into submission. Then participate in forum discussions on the current state of the game, have your say, and join us as we add more missions, more maps, new features, and work towards a full release.

In the meantime, here is a desktop image featuring enemies of the Undead Overlord - some of the tough female characters that will seek to hinder your progress towards total dominion. We think that female brains are every bit as tasty as male brains, if not even more so . . .


In other news, we had a great public test session with the folks at IGM on Average Giants, where you can get a look at the latest build of the game. Our favorite bit was when avg_gamer said, “It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen an RTS with such a unique and refreshing twist.” Although, we would probably have called it a uniquely putrescent twist . . .

Friends of the Undead Overlord,

It was a busy holiday season for everyone around here! Speaking of that, and since this is our first update of the new year, we hope you all had a great time with your family and friends during the holidays and that 2014 will be a wonderful year for you. Or, as we said on our social media accounts - we hope that the warm glow of zombie mutation made your holidays bright! We’ve been updating our social media accounts regularly, so check them out and follow/like us in order see our latest news, screenshots and links to interesting game industry articles.

On the fan missions front, we’ve decided to change things up a bit - now for every 100 likes that we get on Facebook we’ll send a t-shirt to one subscriber chosen at random from the mailing list. As of this writing, we have 223 likes already - so we’ll be giving out two t-shirts for two subscribers right away! In fact, we’ve already randomly selected the lucky winners, and sent them an email requesting details for delivery so that they can receive their t-shirt. The winners will have until February 12th to contact us to confirm, after which we’ll choose another random subscriber.

As some of you know, 2013 finished up strong for the Undead Overlord - and we were very excited to be greenlit in the middle of November. We’re also happy to report that there have already been videos released showcasing gameplay from the pre-alpha demo of the game. If you’re interested, here are a couple of examples:

Today and Thursday (Feb. 4th-5th) we’re exhibiting the game at AppsWorld in San Francisco. Expo passes are free, so if you’re in the area come on by and check us out in the Indie Gaming Zone for a live demo of zombie goodness. We’ll also be taking part in the Big Indie Pitch on Thursday, a speed dating event for publishers and indie developers, where we’ll have a chance to try and infect the brains of several publisher representatives with our unique vision of the coming zombie apocalypse. Little do they know the fate that awaits them . . .

For those that are interested in the nitty gritty details of game development, read on . . .

The last couple of months have mostly been dedicated to cleaning house and keeping the game up to date - integrating the latest versions of the plug-in modules that we use, converting the project to use the latest and greatest version of Unity, and, in this case, a significant rewrite of our combat system code. The combat system will now be simpler, cleaner, and better - and it will also take advantage of some of the latest features and fixes from Unity.

That’s not to say that we haven’t made any forward progress, because we have - improvements to the game audio code, new skins for the grunt zombie, and more small items checked off the list. But primarily it’s been a time of catching up, and preparing for the next push towards our Alpha1 milestone.
