Kickstarter Update : The Gargantuan

The Kickstarter is going well so far. We've now reached the £1K mark! There's still a way to go but the response has been great so far. Thanks to all those who have pledged and shared the project.

The Gargantuan
I've managed to sneak in a bit of alien concept art time in amongst the busy schedule of running a Kickstarter. This is one that I've been wanting to design for a while now. It's a rather big brute who has a rather devastating secondary attack capable of destroying both sets of cover during a fight. Scary!

As the threat level of the world increases, the scale, amount and sheer power of the aliens will increase with it. As that happens Will needs bigger weapons or a way to reduce the threat... maybe he needs to sabotage their way of calling backup?

@Wolfborn - Nice, actually I've just realised I've been in touch with RockLeeSmile already. My head is all full of names so it gets confusing! I'm popping a mail to him in the next minute once I'm done replying on Steam. I love the look of the turn based stuff in Shadow Run Returns, I think that kind of combat would be lovely but it would all come down to development time. It may be extra work compared to what I have at the moment but I'm going to have a sit down and plan all of that soon once the Kickstarter is over.

@ContraptionDay - Yes, definitely! I'm currently doing some art for a Kickstarter update to try and give an idea of how weapon customisation will work. We don't have a huge array of guns in the UK so Will has to grab what he can. Also, if the world has a finite supply of weapons and ammo stealing alien weapons will be key later down the line ;) keep your eyes peeled for the next two updates.

Will there be an adapting feature with technology from the aliens?
I remember you mentioning XCOM was part of the inspiration for this so will Will try to use any scavengable items too his benefit?
Suggestion: Unstable Fuel Cells (Used like Grenades), Limited Usage Alien Weapons, and Biochemical Things?

@Liquidoodle My pleasure, really; those two youtubers came to mind cause they tend to like most things permadeath-y and survival oriented (hopefully they'll check it out; I'll e-mail RockLeeSmile personally about it as well).

I guess the only way to have turn-based combat would be to replace the current model with a grid-based map whenever you'd have an encounter (you know, something like you see in a lot of strategy games such as the Might & Magic franchise, King's Bounty, etc). You could have randomised barriers in there as well, and you'd ideally have to move between cover while using your skills/abilities-- and in the end you'd be thrown back in the real-time overworld map. But of course I realise that's a ton of work! I'm just brainstorming, really :)

Hi Wolfborn. Thanks, I'm glad you're interested. The combat is still early stages at the moment so there's room for change on that front. Ideally each fight will be similar but I would like some extra mechanics in there to really make it shine. I've got lots of ideas that I need to have a go at putting in and seeing if they work. I have contemplated how a turn-based approach may work but have not yet come up with a concrete way to tackle it that works with the real-time nature of the game. This was how I ended up at the present real-time with Mass Effect inspired action select screen idea. It was originally inspired by Pokémon and Infinity Blade so that it would work on desktop and PC :)

I've sent it to a few YouTubers already but I wasn't aware of those guys, I'll be sure to send them a build on my next PR mail around. Thanks for that, it's very helpful!

Great concept art. I also watched your 16min gameplay video on youtube and I'm really loving the potential here. A couple of questions/suggestions: will the combat be like that for every encounter or are you planning to add more mechanics? Turn-based combat would maybe be interesting as well; just putting it out there.
Finally, one good way of bumping your kickstarter income is to provide playable demos to a few youtubers that might be interested in trying out your game. People like Northernlion, RockLeeSmile, etc come to mind-- they're usually really good at letting people know that they're only playing a prototype as well.
Anyway, best of luck, I really want this game to succeed :)
