BreakFree

We changed a lot with BreakFree! We finally changed the games engine over to Unity Engine which is located here. [store.unity3d.com] We are going to be adding a lot more to the game to try and add so much for you guys, by the time we are greenlit onto Steam this game will be great! I am a game like you guys and want the best experience for you guys. We are also going to try and bring this game over to IOS and Android since it seem like it would be a great fit for the game. I have high hopes for the game and this project has taken me to new ways of learning and implementing the ideas I have for the game. Please spread the word as much as possible with the game to help get it onto Steam.

BreakFree is now ranked #25 out of the top 100 games on Steam Greenlight and out of 1,718 Steam Greenlight submissions.

As I have mentioned before in my writing, I do a bit of trading on Steam. Swapping out duplicate bundle codes for others and things of that nature. I recently met a new acquaintance by doing so, and he is now on my Steam friends list. As it turns out, he owns the rights to a game I had looked at on Greenlight about a year ago, and thought that it looked kinda cool. Well, it is a pretty cool little game. It is a block breaker game like the classic game Arkanoid, but in a 3D environment. You move around in first-person and bounce the ball back in front of you rather than seeing the gameplay from a top down view and bouncing the ball up and down. We were talking and he mentioned the game and linked me. I had then remembered seeing it before. He would really like to get his game Greenlit, so I mentioned Wake and Game and offered to write an article about his game. He was thrilled about it, and said he could not wait. So here it is.

This game was originally created by Matt Brooks way back in 1995. The Greenlight page says it took 18 months to complete. While in modern game engines a project like this one could be prototyped in a day, back then the development process was much more grueling and time consuming than it is now. Sammy Brooks is the guy I met on Steam who now owns the rights to this game. Matt Brooks, the creator of BreakFree is his uncle. When Greenlight was first started on Steam, Sam contacted his uncle about BreakFree, he wanted to continue development and make it useable on the modern operating systems of today. His uncle Matt got in touch with the rest of the original dev team, and gave him the OK for this to happen. So here it is. Ready to be recirculated to the gaming community.

Here is a screenshot of Sams description of BreakFree straight from the Greenlight page:Untitled
I had a go at the demo a few times now, and it is quite enjoyable. I was a huge fan of Arkanoid and other block breaker style games back in the day. I still play some of them now and again today. Playing this sort of game in a 3D environment is a lot different, but has the same fun factor for me. Its age definitely shows, you can surely tell its from 1995, but I was never one to hold graphics higher than gameplay and I’m sure a lot of you likely agree with that. I have only played the demo, but the full-fledged game contains over 50 levels full of various environments, breakable blocks, power-ups and items. Though I have not touched it myself, the game also comes with a level editor for making your own maps to play. That is always a plus.

If you want more in-depth info on what this game contains, here is a gameplay video with commentary explaining everything:

If you have any sort of interest in this of game, I ask that you download the demo here. Give it a try then cast an honest vote here for this fun little title. Please do not go and just vote yes simply because you read this article, that is not what I am asking of you. I believe in the Greenlight process, and that votes should not be bought, nor should anyone be pressured or bribed into voting yes. If you think this game is fun, vote yes, if not, the no button is there also. Personally I am hoping to see the game greenlit, and added to my Steam library sometime in the near future. Later gamers.
