Hammerwatch

Here is the updated beta of Hammerwatch (v. 1.02). The beta is still restricted to Act 1 but it now has the warlock class and three different difficulty settings. Read the list of all major changes below!

Updates since last version:

Game play and Design:

Warlock:
  • The Warlock class has been added to the game, he has a dagger which poisons enemies and his secondary attack is a lightning strike.

Money:
  • There are now 5 large coins on every level which reduce the prices in vendors.
  • Most upgrades now cost more money.

Difficulty level:
  • The game should be slightly harder on the standard difficulty, but there are also two new difficulty settings if you want it to be easier or harder.
  • The Paladin now starts with the shield upgrade so that the first part of the game isn't so hard for him.

Player graphics:
  • Each class now have 4 different color variations so that it's less confusing to play as the same classes in multiplayer. You can change color variation by clicking the player graphic in the multiplayer lobby.

Levels:
  • The bonus level has had its graphics changed to more match the rest of the levels.
  • Flower and key placements are now randomized so that there is at least some slight variation if you want to replay the campaign.

Potions:
  • The speed potions have been replaced with rejuvenation potions which gives you full health and mana.
  • Only rejuvenation potions are now placed on the levels.

Map:
  • Mana pickups have been added to the map.

Walk speed:
  • The players now start with the first walk speed upgrade.

Combo:
  • Combos are now a bit easier to trigger.

Username:
  • The game no longer uses your log-in name on the computer but instead asks you for your name the first time you start the game, this name can be changed in the options menu.



Technical:

Rejoining:
  • It is now possible to rejoin multiplayer games which you have dropped from or left.

Saving:
  • The game is now saved when you change level or walk on a checkpoint.
  • To load a multiplayer game the host will need to load the game and then have the other players join the game after it has been started.
  • You can manually rename saves by going in to the saves directory and renaming the files, this will later on be possible to do from in-game.


Sound:
  • If you get an OpenAL error when you start the game you can try deleting the OpenAL32.dll file from the game folder and see if that helps.

Macintosh/Linux:

Here is the updated beta of Hammerwatch (v. 1.01) with changes spanning over all areas of the game. The beta is still restricted to Act 1 but it should play faster and better than the previous one, both in SP and MP modes. Read the list of all major changes below!

Updates since last version:

Game play and Design:

Money:
  • Money is not shared with other players when spent anymore. To see how much money players have, press the map button (default tab).
  • Costs and money drops have been tweaked for a more individual balance. Skilled players should feel spending money on damage is more rewarding, players not so good would be wise to spend a little more on health and armor upgrades.

Difficulty level:
  • The game should now be easier. Some people think the game is too easy - while some find it to be too hard. We are trying to balance things for the entire game and we felt that the first act could be played faster for a more enjoyable experience. Later on, when we add difficult levels to choose from, player could pick a level that suits them better.

Map/minimap:
  • Exploring is added to the game. The map is revealed as you travel, should be much easier to see where you been and not.
  • Enemies are also added to the map, they are represented by red squares.
  • Icons and such have been looked over and some have been changed, it should now be much easier to see vendors and what vendor that is, exits and such.

Controller functionality:
  • Added a direction restriction (8 angles), to make it easier to hit with ranged characters with a controller (could be turned off in the settings).

Walk speed:
  • Start speed of the player is now slightly faster.
  • Added a "rest speed" feature. When not in combat, player speed will increase slowly over time, should improve backtracking if so needed. When entering combat the player is slowed down to his default speed again.

Combo vendor/skill:
  • Our new kill-combo skill is now in the game. The combo system is a way to give the player a boost when killing 10 enemies in a rapid succession. When this boost is triggered, the player will run faster and hit harder. This skill can also be upgraded with a self healing and a magic nova that shoots out from the body of the hero. The time required between every kill is pretty tight at start but this can also be upgraded to make it easier to trigger. The new vendor is located at Floor 1 and Floor 2 and is indicated by a star.

Potion vendor:
  • On the boss level, you will now be able to purchase potions and extra life. This will obviously not be cheap!

Another vitality vendor:
  • Placed another vitality skill on floor 3, she allows the hero to purchase another level of health and mana upgrades.

Ranger and dodge:
  • The ranger can now buy a skill called dodge in the defense store (floor 3), it gives him a 10% chance to avoid a hit if a enemy strikes him (and hits). When this happens, the character will turn black for a short while to indicate the dodge.



Technical:

Bugs and such:
  • Downloading openAL is no longer required since it's been build into the game.
  • Performance should have increased a lot, people with slower computers would benefit mostly from this.
  • Many bugs have been fixed.

Macintosh:

We can now present the public beta of Hammerwatch, it has gone through a short closed beta testing, we have sorted out some of our most prominent bugs and also cleaned up some of our features.

Features:
  • Entire Act 1, with a boss, secrets, bonus level, money, vendors etc
  • Survival level, this is a prototype and not balanced and also very short
  • 3 of our 4 classes
  • Coop support for up to four players, local, Lan and online
  • Controller support

Missing:
  • The game above Act 1, it's like 75% of the game missing
  • The Warlock class
  • Saving
  • Editor
  • Much more

Issues:
  • Some people will most likely encounter bugs, please mail these or any other issue to error@hammerwatch.com and please, include your hardware specs too.
  • You can't join a server that's already up, you need to connect to the host when he's in the server lobby.
  • Sound, if you can't hear anything, you are probably missing OpenAL. There should be a message displayed when you start the game about it.

  • Found that some controllers can't assign all buttons in the game, this can be done manually in the config.cfg file for now (360-controller seems to work fine, except for the analog triggers).
  • Some built in graphics cards have issues with not showing the minimap.
