J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars
Let's make Rachel pretty!
January 24, 2013 - JanKavan

As promised here's the first important announcement about the remastered version. We deeply appreciate the amazing support of the whole Greenlight and Adventure community. We also feel ourselves that Rachel Manners, even if she has a nice personality, wouldn't win a beauty contest although we got quite used to her over those years. She's our good friend who really deserves a visit to a beauty studio.

OK. so we've planned the facelift and guess what? As a thank you present for your amazing support - you'll be there to witness it with us! In other words:

We will make Rachel's facelift as a greenlight community event.

How it will work?
We will pull you into the process from the concept art stage where we will present 3 various concepts and you will have an opportunity to vote on the final Rachel and provide comments. The best concept then will be selected and modelled and the result will again go through voting and comments until you - the community - declares it pretty enough. :) Final version of Rachel will be used in the remastered version of J.U.L.I.A.

OK, OK... But when will this all happen?
There's no reason to do the face lift when we are still far, far away from even seeing a glimpse of the green light. The greenlight process is separated in two parts - in the first part you struggle to get into top 100 games (at the time of writing this announcement we are 18% towards the top 100). When we reach top 100, we struggle to get into greenlit area which is mere couple of games.

This whole community event starts as soon as we reach top 100

I see! What can I do to help?, I almost hear you asking.
It's simple. Spread the news over discussion forums, reddit, twitter, facebook, google+, your friends and classmates. With every single upvote we're getting closer to this event.

You don't like the actual Rachel? You will get the one you want. So please help us and witness this community facelift!

DID the current Rachel fall off the ugly tree and hit most if not all braniches on the way down? She is an average person and her looks are not that importaint, it is what is between her ears that it important!
If you MUST make her look prettier, then why not go for a realistic aesthetic rather then something out of Thunderbirds...
Realism is what counts, she might have developed a couple of love handles with all that time spent is stasis...
Give her a lovely face if you so must, but at least make it look real and give her l o n g hair that cascade down her back.
She deserves a makeover sure...but then again we do want her to look like a real person.
As for your game not getting Greenlit, don't worry, it will. You have one hell of a following...

I wanted to kind of add to my earlier comment and agree with some of the others. I was just looking back at The Longest Journey. I found April Ryan somewhat... well not pretty. In fact in some ways I think she looks a bit like Rachel. Yet, I love April's character her face didn't matter at all. Plus, as I believe someone else said, she's just woken from a long slumber so she's not gonna look her best. But I do agree that it might help to make her a little more human and less computer generated. No matter what, I'm buying the game when it comes on Steam.

I agree with Ragnar. I like the character as is, it just needs more work so it doesn't look like a modified Poser model. Don't make it an impossible beauty, that's just stupid.

I feel this may be slightly misguided. Rather than making her pretty, let's make her look more real and more human. She doesn't need to be able to win a beauty contest, she just needs a boost up out of the uncanny valley.

I just experienced the demo, and I can say I enjoyed it. It you have to change her look, perhaps you could just have a couple of faces you can choose from in game, like Knights of the Old Republic does. The faces don't even need to animate, as that would eliminate lip-sync needs. Also, I'd guess a person who woke from a stasis would probably have a little longer hair. Hair grows even after people die. I bet in stasis, hair would get a little longer.
I would totally get this game once it comes out. Thank you for the experience.

I do think her 3d model could use a rebuilt, but if she turns into a cliché Hollywood eyecandy I'd never buy the game.
I think a regular face with some personality is a better seller than a generic beauty.

For those that don't understand, Rachel doesn't really look like a regular person. This wouldn't be an issue, except the player has to see her frequently.

There's an unspoken psychological thing where people want to look at people that are at least above average or good looking as their protagonists if the show or game has a dramatic feel. Part of it is that it makes viewers/players have more empathy for the character if they find them attractive. Many movies and TV shows make villains look less attractive than the heroes intentionally to push this image further.

Think about any serious drama show on TV or on film. For example, medical doctors tend to be good looking, even if logically it makes no sense. A person doesn't have be attactive to be smart and capable, but on TV they do have to be good looking. You'll never see a neurosurgeon with an unibrow, unless it was a comedy.

Looks are not important (sometimes a face fits the personality even if it's not pretty, and not everyone is). Just fix the lipsinking a little bit and I'll be thrilled to throw my money at you. Hope you get greenlit soon.

I like the looks of this one.
