Black Annex
May 6, 2013 - Lance E. McDonald

I've worked an absolute ton on the accessibility of the game over the past few days which included supporting any resolution you can imagine with a ton of scaling options, and dramatically changing the way the game handles slowdown on slower computers.

With this work done, the game now plays MUCH better on computers lower spec than I originally had targeted, and I've just finished a round of quick testing on the slowest computer in my QA set (A Core Duo T2600 CPU at 2.2ghz on Windows XP, top-of-the-line 7 years ago!) and the game runs fine, so I'm officially changing the specs to a 2.0ghz CPU with no regards to the number of cores you have.

It may run fine on even slower configurations, but it's eventually just up to the player to how much they can tolerate playing a brand new game on a >7 year old machine. Then again, I finished Tomb Raider 2 on my 486 DX2/66 and the whole thing ran at about 3FPS, so some people are willing to put up with low framerates!

Anyway, just glad that more people with slower computers will be able to enjoy Black Annex now :D

Black Annex has been selected as one of six indie games to appear at this year's Australian Indie Showcase.

You'll also be able to ask me any questions you like at a panel at 8:30pm Friday at PAXAus. Come along, play the demo and talk to me. Woo!

Hey, feel like helping send an Aussie indie developer from the country to Los Angeles? Black Annex is nominated to get a cool trip to E3, so if you have an email address and feel like doing a genuinely cool thing, head over to this link and throw down a vote.

If you want to be a totally radical individual, pass the link around and see if we can send Black Annex to America for one of the biggest consumer entertainment expos in the world. In the meantime, here's another new-ish screenshot!

I've got Black Annex running at 60fps (and it's absolutely beautiful) on every desktop machine I own now, and I've got it performing much better on all the test laptops I have in the studio. I'm adding frame-skipping and a lot of new performance tweaks to the game and I'm going to abandon the notion that the game needs a multicore CPU now.

I'm not committing to any definite specs now, because I don't want to make promises I can't keep, but things are a LOT better now. I want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy Black Annex so I'm putting all the work I can in to making it perform its best.

The response to Black Annex over the past fortnight since the release of the first trailer has been absolutely amazing. I didn't expect anything like this and you've all been so incredible in your support for this game!

I'm doing my best to live up to the expectations I've set so far, and I'll be releasing some more media soon. I'd love to drop another trailer soon with some real gameplay-flow demonstrated so you can get a much better idea of how a mission prep and deployment plays-out in the game.

In the meantime, thank you all so much for your help in making this the best thing it can be! Here's a screenshot I just took while testing some stuff.
