KILL THEM ALL
April 5, 2014 - Minus40c

The first enemy we redesigned for KILL THEM ALL is the Alien Trooper. After establishing the Oligarchy alien system of government, we started to hash out designs. We wanted something that was a bit 'more' than the Mutants (our cannon fodder enemy) offering an increased challenge for players but nothing they couldn't handle. The Troopers are regarded as the lesser race within the Oligarchy, used for basic grunt and security work, often disregarded and expendable. You know what that means, LOTS OF THEM TO KILL.

Everything starts with concepts, we first started with a basic body rough and heads, then decided that the aliens couldn't breathe our mixture of air, so we concepted out a body suit with a mask/filter and finally finalized the design:

Next up was the weapon, we went through a couple designs before deciding on a mix of the concepts. We haven't decided if it'll be useable by the player as something to optionally replace secondary class weapon.

Here it is ingame!

For the trooper, first stage for 3d work is the high poly mesh, here's the Trooper in all it's high poly glory:

Then made the low poly, UV and texture, if you've see our blog on the Contra you know how the process goes. Here's what we want to see, the Trooper ingame!

Thanks to everyone who supported us getting KILL THEM ALL on Steam! Please continue to give us your feedback, we appreciate the time you take to contact us to let us know how to make the game better.

Eventually we have to setup an official site, do a media release and all that crap, but for the time being we're going to stick with the Greenlight page and keep in touch with you guys through here.

Right now we're working on environmental props and level design, more on that in the next blog!

KILL THEM ALL has been Greenlighted! Thank you all for your support, feedback and comments, now to the future: what does this mean?

As many of you know, when we originally put KILL THEM ALL on Greenlight we received a massive outpour of feedback from gamers. You saw what the game could be and told us straight up, you told us what was good, what was terrible and what you wanted to see. We really appreciated your honest feedback then and now.

In response we scrapped everything and hammered out a new design with all of your feedback and started over again. We've been posting updates, discussed what we're going to do for our first early Alpha release and you've been giving us further feedback to which we've adjusted the game, it's been great, and thanks to your support and votes KILL THEM ALL is now going to be on Steam! Thank you again!

The work isn't done by any means, it's just begun! The two of us are working as hard as we can, when we can (juggling real life responsibilities) to have something that you'll consider good enough to invest into to help us continue building it.

Please continue to give us your feedback and input, we really do appreciate it!

New video up on the queue showing the Jackhammer animations and a whole lot of WIP everything else. :) Also, a bunch of screenshots of killing AI!:

Few notes of interest:

  • Every shot has a small randomizer that affects the kickback and the muzzle flash, making each shot just a little unique.
  • Each ejected shell comes from an ejection point on the weapon, ejecting randomly and bouncing off the world; characters, objects, the ground, you (if you strafe into them).
  • Each shot emits a light source which interacts with the world, it's the little things.
  • We'll be requiring a sound person eventually, as you can tell in the animation vid it's pretty rough, if you're interested please drop us an email[minus40c.com]!
  • Everything is raw work in progress so please, give us all your feedback!

Here's a bunch of Ai (using the Contra player class) we added to make for some shots, the Ai are equipped with the spamtastic alien grenade launcher in the original trailer (we'll be changing it's functionality in the future).

it's go time!

Oh yeah you're gonna get it

2vs1? Pfft, I can take on an army with this thing

Don't ask why I'm looking at the ground while reloading. :)

SPLAT! (Still working on the blood effects)

You're going to get chewed up

Everything is work in progress so please let us know your feedback!

What would you like for us to discuss next? Further details on the Contra: special ability? The new enemies? Alien weapons technology? Let us know!

Thank you all again for your continued feedback and your votes on Greenlight, we continue to work hard to push KILL THEM ALL where the community wants it.

With the Jackhammer revealed for our first player class something was missing; arms! Rather than a generic set we decided each class should have their own:

We developed the arm within stages; first is a basic block out in order to do the rig for the skeletal animations, this is important as to avoid any serious polygon warping which'll make the texture look heavily stretched/distorted. After setting up with the foundation of the animations we continue to add further polygon detailing in key areas. Then it's onto the normal map, first a high poly mesh for the hard surface details, second into sculpting the fabric shape and then doing the fine detailing; fabric texturing, threads, etc.

Here's a shot of them ingame, look at all that detail:

Next is onto the texturing, you'll notice the blue camo, we're still trying out different textures for the Contra. We're really digging the blue, let us know what you think!

We're working on the fine tuning details of the animations, particles, etc. for the Jackhammer right now.

Here's a little preview of that:

In our first content update post we announced the first player class for KILL THEM ALL: the Contra. Now we're revealing the Contras primary weapon of choice:

That's right, the Pancor Corporation Jackhammer, one of the few 12-gauge, gas-operated fully automatic shotguns 'available' - Pancor only developed a few prototypes and the weapon never made it to full production. The Jackhammer has been featured in a number of TV shows, movies and games just for it's sheer ludicrous destructive power.

What better default weapon for the Contra, the ultra violence killing machine?

KILL THEM ALL is set 20 years in the future - soon after the alien invasion, so we didn't want to take the standard Jackhammer design and apply it to the game. Instead we wanted to update it but still retain the classic design elements.

Here's the original design of the Jackhammer:

Wikipedia article for those interested[en.wikipedia.org]

And here's our concept redesign:

We kept the iconic features; the drum magazine, the long sight and we fixed the muzzle to have the angled cut in the model.

Speaking of the model, here it is!

High poly render which we used for normal map baking and low poly direction:

The initial low poly with rough texture in our test map:

The finalized ingame model:

And the Contra with the Jackhammer and Jackhammer first person view!

You'll notice that the weapon is lacking anyone holding it first person view, that's because we're still working on the remaining character animations. :)

Hope you all enjoyed getting a look at the Contra primary weapon, we'll do another update with the finalized animations and showing it in action!

Everything is work in progress so please let us know your feedback!
