Darkwind: War on Wheels

Having played Darkwind off and on for roughly 2 years I am suprised it took this long to get into a roject such as greenlight. I am a big fan of the game but have to bring attention to one advertized flaw. I guess in a sense you can say open world when describing Darkwind, But truly it is not. there are many "paths" you can take from each town to the other towns, yes. However it is not "open world" in all reality. make it so and add/finish the on foot aspect of the game along with a "campaign" and I truly believe this game could EXPLODE the mmo genre.

Thanks guys. I'm just looking into the Steam API will I'll need to integrate into the game client. Also overhauling the DW website, and doing a few tweak and balances. So, looking at a couple of months anyhow.

Great Community, Looking forward to seeing new faces!

If you ever loved Steve Jackson's Car Wars, run, do not walk, to Darkwind. Car design, personel managment, skills, guns, and V-8s instead of those pansy electric engines in Car Wars.

Darkwind is on my very, very short list of all time favorite games.

Thanks Blair. Actually no need to vote now, we've been greenlighted! :-)
I'll be making announcements here soon...

GREAT game! how do I vote YES
buellzz Apr 16, 2014 @ 6:36pm
Not just turn based racing and Death racing (with multiple cars), combat with up to 20 vehicles is where you realise why turn base is a must in this game. Running 10 trucks at once through a slaver ambush in Badlands, managing speed, steering, gun fire from anywhere up to 8 points on a truck (less for smaller vehicles) would not be possible in real time.

Turn based racing? You don't see that every day. Interest peaked.

not really into the combo turn based racing RPG sorry. good luck tough
triad4evr Nov 25, 2013 @ 6:10pm
Played it for years and while it can be a bit of an "elites only" club for the good stuff, the fundamentals are good. If they add the capability to do solo missions outside the multiplayer server, it will absolutely rock. Otherwise, it's still a pretty decent MM game!
Cakeophany Nov 21, 2013 @ 1:44pm
A truly brilliant and unique game in urgent need of a single player persistent campaign. Hopefully greenlight will pay for that.
Upgrayedd Nov 10, 2013 @ 9:28am
Great game played it for a few years

Bad week for my gang all shot up. One guy lost a leg. At least they have all managed to limp home so far. The cars I can replace. The lvl 100+ characters no so easy.
Baked Beans Sep 5, 2013 @ 9:06am
My two best gangers are walking back to Somerset, and I'm jut thankful for them to be alive. They will have to spend some time in the hospital when they get back, but they fought off two waves of Mutant animals on their walk home.
Sargalicious Sep 4, 2013 @ 11:02am
Pretty unique, it has its idiosyncrasies, but there is nothing to quite match the joys of success and watching your gang grow, and the dark depression of losing a prized ganger. The game has perma-death and there is also a cut-down version of the game that makes thing *really* apocalyptical!

Play some events for free, see if you can get used to the graphics, and get Dark-Wind uncer your skin!
Baked Beans Sep 4, 2013 @ 10:51am
The breaks are a result of the game being turn based. You could not control a 10 car team if it was real time. You control mutlitple vehicles. The video is old and doesn't really showcase the group play sandbox aspect very well. Can some players with good vids and screenshots post them here? I love this game, and there isn't another on the market that provides the depth, strategy, and immersion of darkwind. The devleoper is a cool m'fer too, and needs to see that people still want this game to succeed.
l0w! Sep 3, 2013 @ 8:48am
would be coller without that breaks... Keep flow guys
Baked Beans Sep 1, 2013 @ 8:56am
Let's keep the word out on this great game. I keep coming back year after year to this in depth, real physics, permadeath, fully customisable, skill based, sandbox, turn based, masterpiece. Vote yes for Darkwind!

Great game great community. Perfectly executed Perma-death system. This game captures the Feel of a Mad Max movie perfectly!
Flether Jun 12, 2013 @ 5:41am
Have played this for a while and keep coming back to it! Love the community and the game itself, values tactics more than anything, and gives one heck of a challenge!

Go ahead and check it out on their webpage, you can try out the racing and some stuff for free, and a cheap payment gets you 3 months of this game. Do it!

If Carwars was your thing, you're going to love this.

Dude. It looks like someone finally made a proper Car Wars game. SO IN.
armisius Mar 21, 2013 @ 8:59pm
I recommend this game heartily. I have about 35 games I've purchased through steam, but I've spent more time playing Darkwind then most of them. It is an action/RPG because as the gang-leader, you groom your squads hard-won skills over time. It isn't just a turn based deathrace game. I primarily fought wilderness fights against bandits and did gladiatorial style vehicular combat. The turn based nature of the game is fantastic because it allows you to plan your angle of attack, speed and direction. (It allows for anticipation and dread, when you realize you made a mistake (features permadeath)). Plus turn based is a bit of a misnomer, you just tap space to get to the next turn so turns can just take a few seconds. And yes, the game records every combat and race so you can watch them again later. It is a great community, very helpful. The gameplay is challenging and gripping. Give it a chance, use your imagination and you'll be rewarded.

Before voting on this game automatically as a no because it's a turn-based racing game, go to the site and try the game out. It's actually a very interesting game and it will take you about 30 mins to decide if you like the style or not. I seem to keep coming back to this game because it's so much like the Car Wars that I played before.
Lancelot844 Jan 24, 2013 @ 3:39pm
Sam is working on a sequel, that will be single player...if that comes out I'll be back. Online? I'm married with kids now, not a choice.....
Lancelot844 Jan 24, 2013 @ 3:38pm
This one takes a while to get into, but if you have ever played Car Wars, this will become your crack! Beware, you will get invested! However, you *will* lose your best crew that you train up and make elite...and there are No cloning features like Car Wars. Its like X-Com and Car Wars on steriods! You will lose, you will feel pain, and these loses will sometimes make you want to walk away from the game..until it calls you again. I had to quit, I never played another MMO after this one, I really became addicted and knew if i ever came back my real life would be forfiet.
NemesisZidar Jan 24, 2013 @ 1:35pm
i thought i give it a try, ever open for new stuff and turn based racing?Maybe it is a good idea? Not really, it is looking boring to hell
Random Profile10 Jan 13, 2013 @ 11:17pm
Funny. You have a review from PC Gamer on here, but I can't seem to find it when I go to their site. Very interesting...

tonyrobots Dec 3, 2012 @ 4:16pm
@Bonder -- there are semi-realtime replays available after each event -- they are very cool. And it's not just (or even primarily) racing. It's all about vehicular combat. There are also deathraces (including flamethrowers, gatling guns, rockets, mines, grenade launchers, spikes, and even paint spray), arena combats, and wilderness confrontations with local pirates, raiders, and other post-apocoscum. It's the most addicting game I've played in a long, long time.
Vangald Nov 30, 2012 @ 10:13am
Turn based and racing seem likc concepts that go completely against the grain of each other. Not sure I get where the enjoyment comes from mixing the two.
Gibbonici Nov 14, 2012 @ 6:26am
Looks interesting. Car Wars claimed many hours of my life in the 80s.
Pestilence Oct 31, 2012 @ 6:50pm
I voted yes even though your speedometer was all the way towards gameplay and it doesn't seem that fun. But it's a unique concept that I feel has potential.
H41KU-TP Oct 17, 2012 @ 7:56pm
Just like to say the game looks much better than the video portrays..maybe a higher res vid would be better.
H41KU-TP Oct 17, 2012 @ 7:55pm
Superb game. For all Car wars fans. Looking forward to DW2 at some point with it's single player campaign.

My god the memories. So much fire, musclecars and giant scorpions.
Willbreaker Oct 6, 2012 @ 10:44pm
Just tried this out. Lots of fun once you understand the interface. A simplified UI would do wonders for the game without taking away the challenge of the game mechanics itself.

Upvoted and Fav'ed

I have played this and while it needs polish (read "more money") the game is still awesome.
