Love the old-school feel.

Nice, totally digging the castlevania vibe. I like in the video where the shop owner said "welcome to my humble store" which to my gamdev mind made me think Humble Store. I digress. Good game, voted yes!

This reminds me of a little flash game for one of the Ludum Dares someone had made...I think it was "grand mystic quest of discovery?"

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
Sorry for the late reply, I was busy with RL stuff and did not have a lot of time.

@katukinabarra I was talking about Local Multiplayer (Same screen coop).

@ShaistraToad This is currently way out of my scope and the code is not set up to do that. Maybe for "Cloaks and Spells 2: The Empire Strikes Back" ;)

I'm about to release another build that offers mostly bug fixes and polish to several key areas.
Custom user input works better now too. I'm also experimenting with a new control scheme that's easier to use. Next build will focus on content again (as seen in the latest screenshot).

Always happy to read the comments! Thanks guys!

Saw this game on the german GM-community forum, followed your link and now I'm here and left my vote. Reminds me a bit of prince of persia ;)

this is castlevania
Tazi 27 déc 2013 à 13h29
the style of level-design reminds me to DOS era games, tho the palette is more NES, I think... or maybe not.
anyway, it looks nice for what it is, and has fun gameplay, I'd buy it on Steam, if I wouldn't have bought it already! :)
ShaistraToad 23 nov 2013 à 4h53
i like the camera as it is now and katukinabarra is right on he type of multiplayer i was refering it for each player the camera only focuses on that player on thier screen just like as if they was playing single player
NinjaFunk71 20 nov 2013 à 0h39
This looks brutal to play and fun to watch.
GMEN 9 nov 2013 à 17h24
I voted this game to be greenlit because we need more games like castlevania and many gamers are craving for these types of games
katukinabarra 7 nov 2013 à 13h19
Just to clear things out. I love multiplayer games and even Steam is not the clearest when talking about multiplayer types. I usually make these distinctions:

-Online multiplayer (each player usually uses a device and need the internet to paly all together)

-Lan multiplayer (each player usually uses a device and play offline having different devices connected in the same room)

-Local multiplayer (more than one player are playing in the same device and not internet connection or other device connection are needed)

I was referring to the third one, while I think ShaistraToad was referring to the second one, we have to be careful because for a long time, LAN and same device multiplayer have both been called local so, what types of multiplayer mode(s) are you thinking of Sean?

Just to know, thanks for the answer.

Thanks for the feedback guys, very encouraging!

@ShaistraToad What type of camera would you prefer for local coop ?

@Eiskaffee Thanks once again for the excellent write up !
- I'm glad you like the visual improvements
- The protagonist runs a bit faster than before. I also adjusted the attack hitbox a bit, which helps a lot against diagonal flying skulls.
- The boss is hard. Should be a bit easier now with the implemented tweaks.
- Puzzles are very hard to balance for a large audience. I will do my best.
- I tried to keep it short and sweet. Looks like it worked :)
- I took out the mechanic to prevent falling last minute due to some unsolved bugs. Looks like I'll keep it out :)
Let me know if you have any other feedback! Thanks!
katukinabarra 6 nov 2013 à 6h23
local coop would be nice!
Eiskaffee 6 nov 2013 à 5h55
0.80

Some thoughts...
-The vines & torches look good, especially the vines.
-'Flames of Hell' Looks great.
-The gems are brighter. 'Now' they look like they are charged with mana. Easier to notice too.
-Did you tweak the movement of our protagonist? During the boss fight the control felt smooth, better than before.
In 0.70 I had a little problem when turning and hitting flying skulls, I couldn't react fast enough but it seems less of a problem now.
-This is the 1st time I beat the boss :) died about 10~15 times on 0.70. I admit I'm not good at this :P
-The puzzles add a different kind of fun. My suggestion would be easy-to-medium puzzles for the main game, hard puzzles for secrets.
-I like the tutorial, every tutorial should be short like this.
-On my first feedback I wrote that I don't like the 'automatic ladder fall'. Now I kind of enjoy it. Falling makes the game much faster.

Cheers!

I Like the concept and look forward to seeing more
ShaistraToad 2 nov 2013 à 12h30
local co-op would make me happy among many others as we could use hamachi or antoher program to have others join us
Sean  [créateur] 1 nov 2013 à 21h30
@ShaistraToad Are you talking about local co-op ? Technically I would be able to do that. Online multiplayer on the other hand I'm not very familiar with and would have to get a pro to do it for me.
Since I'm operating on a tight budget & schedule I currently can't afford to implement all those mentioned features. I'll soon launch a Kickstarter to increase awareness and funding of Cloaks and Spells. I will put in co-op/pvp as one of the stretch goals and see if I can raise enough to implement those modes.
I love coop games and made a local coop game once before as a student project and the hardest part was testing it, since you always need a second person to play. This alone almost doubles production costs.
ShaistraToad 30 oct 2013 à 20h43
a good idea i jsut thought about is do it kind of like unepic did and have a completly seperate multiplayer feature seperate from the single player i am aware that this idea will take more time but will also give people that want to do the main story they can and those that like to play with others also will have their option
ShaistraToad 30 oct 2013 à 20h40
co-op mainly but some pvp would make it interesting i play alot of co-op games and this looks like it could be made into one jsut the maps might have to be redone a bit for multiplay as there will be more then one person doing the levels
MISG 30 oct 2013 à 14h39
looks interesting, I'll keep an eye on this one.
Sean  [créateur] 29 oct 2013 à 20h41
Thanks for the feedback everyone! Next alpha & demo version is coming out this coming weekend.

@DoominaBottle Glad I could clear that up for you.
@Campaigner Thanks for the support!
@ShaistraToad What type of multiplayer features would you like ? PvP or Coop ?
Operater 29 oct 2013 à 12h43
nope
dafaq?! 27 oct 2013 à 4h42
this is sweet!
ShaistraToad 26 oct 2013 à 17h27
i wish it was multiplayer id be more willing to get
Jerry 24 oct 2013 à 13h07
Thought about it and I'll get it. Not immedietly but eventually. My 10th current upvote.
DoominaBottle 24 oct 2013 à 5h56
@Sean My mistake, I've not actually played the game but I noticed in the gameplay footage in the video the character never seemed to duck. Rewatching it I realised I missed the moment in the last few seconds of the footage where he ducks to avoid an attack.

Still I'm looking forward to it.
Sean  [créateur] 23 oct 2013 à 23h21
Thanks for the positive response guys! Please let your friends know about Cloaks and Spells!

@DoominaBottle I'm not sure which version you played but as of Alpha v 0.70 the ability to duck is implemented.
Nax_o 23 oct 2013 à 4h03
awesome old school. needs more SID music. Yes.
DoominaBottle 22 oct 2013 à 2h10
Please add the ability to duck otherwise looks great.
Lord Weeaboo 21 oct 2013 à 2h16
What's this? A retro-style game that looks like a late 80's/early 90's PC game?

Voted. I appreciate indie developers that put effort in what their game tries to mimic.
GameDragonZero 20 oct 2013 à 12h29
Agressively old school, kudos. Worth greenlighting.
Sean  [créateur] 20 oct 2013 à 0h29
Thanks for the feedback guys!
@Doozie I got some playtesters to test the latest version today. I'm implementing some fixes, improvements, adjustments and the 3rd Boss fight. I hope to release the next version in 1 or 2 weeks. This update is larger then the last so it took a bit longer. Thank you for your patience!
@Ԑໃ౦ŋ੦ρ3α Thank you! Linux version might happen down the road. Currently I have not enough experience/knowledge in porting the game to Linux.
Doozie 19 oct 2013 à 18h40
@Sean can I get a heads up on when the next Desura update will be rolling in? I was trying to find a website or forum with some information but I didn't find it.
Aurinko 18 oct 2013 à 15h14
NICE art and music. If you ported to Linux I would buy instantly. The 4th screen, with the lush vegetation and the waterfall, for example. That art style takes me to another place. Really fantastic job.
Sean  [créateur] 14 oct 2013 à 19h52
@Mogg I've played quite a few of those games growing up on my 486. Maybe you can point me to the one that features engaging puzzles and a spell casting system? I would love to play it.

Pick your poison.
Your work here brings nothing new that has not been seen or done before. Behold the treasure trove of DOS games! These are just a very small sample of you are doing here. If you want to look further, please, how about doing some of your own research.
