There's none for Valve, they'd make no money with it,
none for the dev as he'd make none either and could aswell host it somewhere else, MMD's isn't that large so there are plenty of free hosts available though it's possible that it'd break the traffic limit but then there's still torrents, it's easy to forget that they can also be used for legal sharing lol.
So given there's no obvious gain for anyone on the work involved side it seems logical to be suspicious.
Personally I'd prefer MMD or MMM to open up the source or MMF (MikuMikuFlex) getting more attention as it is already open source.
But if MMD really stays free on Steam and it's release there does in whatever way cause it getting more updates then I won't mind that.
I'd really love some MMM features in it like the sound track editor, model scaling and some other things.
