I got the same thing, read some of the other comments and figured out that I had to plant it on marsh (swamp) land. You can use a pitch fork to dig some up if it's far from your base, then just dig some land near by and place the marsh land there. You should be able to plant the reeds on that.

when i try to plant them it says "i can't do this " and puts the roots back in my inventory

Just because it says it's out of date doesn't mean this mod doesn't work. I refuse to update the api code just because it says out of date. Unless the mod isn't working I will not update it. If it's not working and/or causing issues with the game I will gladly look into it.

maybe add in the description that you need to grab some swamp turf in order to plant them.. the swamp is halfway across the map for me, and i was so confused as to why i couldnt plant them (even though i picked them up in random forest/meadow spots). not looking forward to battling my way through hordes of spiders again for some turf =P

Play the game enough and you will eventually run across one. It's usually located in the swamp and a large quantity of reeds located in one specific spot with a huge amount of tentacles guarding them.

I also fixed the issue with them burning forever by being struck by lightning.


I will look into increasing the amount of time for them to grow. I will probably increase it by 1.5 times what it is set at.

I understand your purpose but to balance it correctly enough even though there is no real purpose of how you can dig up land with a pitchfork, but it should be automatically fertile. I also agree about the time for which it takes to grow being probably extended for about another minute or two but seeing that marshland is smoushy dirt (Mud), it should be known that it therefore is already fertile.

I have no idea how Mods actually work, but, it might be cool if you had to grow them in a craftable pot like the Ferns.

I do understand that swamplands are the most fertile soil in the world, however, Don't Starve is not real life and being able to plant reeds anywhere there is swamp land requires a balancing mechanic. You can dig swamp land up and move it to any location in which you wish with a pitch fork; this is why the requirement of fertilization was given to the reeds.

If you disagree with the balance mechanic, I am open to other ideas on how to balance it out. The only other thought I had at the time was to increase the amount of time it took for them to grow.

Note: There are other mods available that do something similiar to this mod, but as those come with a large portion of things that are grouped together. I left this one as a stand alone mod to allow flexibility with modifications to the game.

Don't take this the wrong way but in my last comment it had nothing to do with fertilizers. I said they are not fertilized in real life.

Actually it's a balance mechanic. Nothing more, nothing less. You can plant them anywhere you want, so there has to be a mechanic for long term balance. You can easily get several types of fertilizers so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

You don't fertilize reeds in real life. Make it so it isn't fertilized. It isn't fertile due to it being in a swamp/water.

Author, you should fix the bugs of these:

1. When you plant the Reeds in marshland, they do not grow
2. When you pick reeds, you pick them immediately instead of gathering

Yes there is. "Farming for light" mod. Doesn't let you dig them up, but instead make them and plant them.

@TheMasterKirito, I believe that on the Don't Starve official forums there is a mod like that already. I remember seeing something to the effect of diggable lightbulbs and being able to replant them above ground.

I have a request. Since there doesn't seem to be other mods to dig undiggable plants, I was wondering if you could make so we can also dig light bulbs plants, glowing mushs and all the other undiggable plants in the game. Being able to plant them near my base would be just awesome. Thanks for your time, and awesome mod, by the way.

So, yes this mod still works as stated, but you can only plant reeds on swamp turf--original or relocated. As far as some kind of trap? I haven't seen anything for that yet.

While the update states it's outdated, all my plugins still work with the latest version of Don't Starve. Please enable the mod and continue to play with it as usual, the only issue is that the mod API version doesn't match the actual game api version. This however should not cause an issue as the mod api was developed after this mod was ever created.

Thanks for a very useful mod! It makes the game really more reallistic. I hated it to dig out gras and twigs but not be able to dig reeds.

I hope you don't make tentacles spawn around these, i feel that being able to only plant them on swamp is a perfect balance to availability, it's not particularly hard to relocate a decent sized patch of swamp turf, but i have accausionally died while trying to dig up a reed plant that was too close to a Tentacle =(

@Snowflame Cocainum, Reeds can only be plantable on swamp turf. Swamp turf can be dug up by a pitch fork, the reeds are just like other plantables where they need fertilizer to grow.

I can't plant the reeds I dug up, maybe it's because it's winter? regaurdless, it's a bit of an issue, as they were close to my base and now I need to travel a bit more to get reeds. Am I doing something wrong?

Well, you can always consider that one can plant Reeds for Reeds only at swamp turf, and plant Tentacle Spots for Tentacles, but only at swamp turf, as a means of making it so that the player is still forced to travel to a swamp for Reeds and a chance at encountering Tentacles. Otherwise, digging and moving the Reed Plant to most anywhere is the one thing that gives it an advantage, while otherwise, you will find yourself forced back over to swamps to go planting and farming Reeds and Tentacles otherwise. It would also make sense that moving Reed Plants would require Fertilization, while planting them would not. This is merely my thought on improving this whole system, and it comes from a combination of your both your mod and others.

This mod was specifically designed to allow the moving of reeds without overpowering the reproduction of reeds. Whenever I create modifications for Don't Starve, I look at the usefulness of the modification and the actual impact on playability it has to the game. I feel that by allowing people to reproduce reed plants it makes the game a lot easier than by simply moving the reeds. I might even change this modification a little to make tentacles spawn around the new location given a certain time frame, this is still in consideration.

I remember a mod called Plantable Plantables. I mentioned it on your rabbit mod. While they did make it so you could plant Reeds on Swamp Turf to plant new Reeds, sometimes the player doesn't always want to plant what they gather, and would rather just move the reeds. However, if your mod can allow planting Reeds to make new Reed plants, in addition to making Reeds diggable and moveable to other places, that would be wonderful and a big improvement on this mod. I'm quite sure your mod would become much more popular then!
