Only buying the house does not get you the Thane title or Lydia, the housecarl. You must still complete the main quests as originally intended for those rewards.
I'm currently trying to investigate a potential bug. Someone on the Nexus notes that it didn't work for him. I can't seem to replicate the bug, so please let me know if this does or doesn't work for you!
You do not become Thane, as that is tied into the complicated Favors system somehow. I'm basically afraid to break it. This was is the most compatible. As for, the vanilla buying of houses, Baalgruf will still SAY that you can now buy a house when you do the right quest, but you do not have to buy it again, no.
