Very innovative idea, I haven't seen this anywhere else. Good work!

Wow, I would never have anticipated enjoying this as thoroughly as I have. The concept is simple, but elegant in its simplicity. The editor allows for such a level of fine tuning as to allow an extremely impressive amount of variance between any two plants, no matter how you start them out. I have high hopes for this game and fully intenf to buy it should it warrant a full release.

This is a really great idea
I would to make carnivorous plants
;)

Sounds like spore but for plants. Awesome idea, I'd definitely buy a full game.

it would be awesome if the fauna slowly adapted to the changes made in the forest, thus shifting the challenges and bonuses animals give over play with some degree of influence. like short animals developing longer necks to eat higher fruit, or dieing out if rapid change destroys their food source

Very unique. How many games have been popular from being unique? Pretty much all of them. I'd love to see this as a full game.

Looks like the first of it's kind. You should DEFINETLEY make it.

Will this be a modern version of Sim Life?
Jayelinda  [author] May 12, 2013 @ 7:59pm
The plan is to have very simple fauna simulations - animals with predefined appear requirements and factors that control population. Plants will be able to have protective mechanisms, and reproductive parts have factors that work well with certain animals.

I love this idea. Would be great if the strategy component could include elements of fauna so that the design of plants could incorporate ideas of resistance to herbivory, poliisation and seed dispersal as well as climate and geography. Pherhaps that would make it far too complicated, but would be fantastic to have to design something that has to balance very different pressure.

A very cool concept, I would really like to see this develope into a full game.

I'd love to beta test this for you guys and maybe do some youtube video's to get it out there. I like the idea and the spore look to it. Also anything to help a aussie developer out.

A few people have asked about evolving plants, and the answer is still subject to prototyping, but probably not. The idea of the game is that the player must design plants to best suit the conditions - applying evolutionary pressures and having the plants change would take the gameplay out of the hands of the player, which doesn't make for a fun game :)

There will be templates for a whole range of plant types, large and small and yes, trees and grasses. The reason you see so many varistions of the one type in the images so far is that I only have a few templates so far, and that one works best at this stage. I have for myself a big list of real-world plants, and until I can create them all, the templates aren't done :)

Yes you will be able to design flowers and fruits, and even seeds and protective structures like thorns.

Would the game simulate evolution over time among the plants you design? Will it only be smaller plants and shrubs or will there be trees and grasses? Adding flowers or fruits to plants could be a nice addition also.

Ludus silva game mechanics will be based around building a forest covering the largest area with the most diversity. Some environments will be more difficult to achieve this in than others. The player must design plants best suited to the conditions in order for them to do well and spread. eg. big, broad leaves will be better at gathering light, but will get UV damage and lose too much water if the plant is too exposed. Thus they are best for low plants that share space with taller ones.

Many things are still subject to prototyping, I'll be posting the progress on that as I come to it. Right now, it's just the plant editor in development - the idea is that I'll release a demo of that and people can have something to play with while I work on the bigger game.

Of course, the wider game is always in the back of my mind and being documented in the meantime - questions and requests are welcome!

I would like to see a larger game play overview.. the plant generator looks great, but sketch out how the world would go!

This looks like it has a ton of potential, I'd love to see it on Steam.

Hmm, this looks unusually interesting.

This would be perfect to just Make a Big plant for fitting into the Carbon-era (when the insects where big as hell...). I would defenatly buy it.
ordinary_charm Mar 6, 2013 @ 10:51pm
so cool!
I am in a Plant college class right now so this would have been perfect!
remember to include symbiotic relationships with fungi in the roots :)
clauja02 Mar 6, 2013 @ 8:00pm
This is very original and cool! Will the forest be an interactive space, or do you just customize and create plants?
