Shining Force - Hard Mode & AI Improvements

Descriere
This mod reworks every battle encounter in the game, making the game more difficult, and improving the monster AI.

The mod also features a few additional items and abilities, both for you and the monsters.

The Force is also significantly rebalanced.

INSTALL NOTE: Mods currently do not work with the Simple Launcher. Subscribe to the mod, then launch the game room normally, click Games Library, click Mod and finally, select this mod from the list.

AI Changes

In the normal Shining Force, many monsters have AI which will make them stand there and take a beating.

This mod fixes that. Monsters are more aggressive and will gun for you when you are 3 squares away.

New Items

There are 7 new weapons to discover, new rings and a new healing item for the late game.

New Abilities

Most Centaurs now gain a CHARGE ability, letting them attack from afar even with a lance a few times per battle.

Archers gain SNIPE, which lets them target enemies from 3 to 6 squares away.

Bleu learns a single target FROST ability, and ZYLO gains a 5-square SWIPE ability.

Monsters also have access to a few unique abilities of their own.

30 Reworked Battle

All 30 battles have been reworked completely to provide a fresh, harder experience, with smarter AI.

Expect new enemy variations and equipments, as well as much more challenging boss battles.

Monsters often come with different equipment, and all their stats have been rebalanced. Make sure to analyze them before attacking!

General Changes

-Fixed Land Effect
-Automatic Item Passing
-Can see CRIT in STATUS
-Items have a 100% chance of breaking instead of 25%
-Poison does 15% of your maximum health in damage instead of a fixed 2
-Attacks do between 70% and 130% of their damage (normal values are between 80%/120%)
-The AI prioritizes your Hero (Max) less than usual

Known Bugs
Unused Spell Icons are distorted. I've failed to fix it but fortunately, the bug is completely harmless.

Okay then, thanks for the reply.

@GamerXT If all of your units are outside of a certain area, they may retreat, its very map-specific. Its normal behaviour, I wish once a zone was triggered it could remain triggered, but the game doesn't allow for that.

As for Smart Heal AI and XP overflow, both are enabled in the Hard Mode versions.

Enemies sometimes randomly retreat back to their starting position, not sure if intended though.

I was using the normal damage and less hero focus version of this upgrade. Also, does the AI heal more intelligently, and is extra exp, if at all, added after leveling, similar to the sequel ? This is a good way to play, other than that.

@TheRedComet That's definitely weird. The only reason I could see for that is due to a conflicting mod or your saves folder holding data it shouldn't.

I tried the workaround gs01-gs04 method and it did work, but it makes the enemy sprites turn into max. Was really looking forward to finally playing this mod, and I still cant ;-;

Fix for anyone trying to save their game on Steam: You'll have to go into your C Drive, into the folder that you store each of the games in the Sega Genesis Emulator (This can be done easily through right-clicking the launcher on steam, if I'm not mistaken), and into the Shining Force folder. There will be a folder for saves and a folder for the mod's saves with some long number attached to it. Go into that folder, grab the save you attempted to generate in the emulator (entitled gs01.sav if you saved to slot 1), and drag it into the Shining Force folder. Go back to the emulator, back out of the save/load screen, and when you re-enter it you should have access to your saves.

I don't have a screengrab of the issue, but I was on the battle right before getting the Chaos Breaker and I ended up having a graphical glitch where all the game except for the character sprites turned into an amalgamation of grey blurred lines. This likely would fix itself with the ability to close and reopen the game, but I can't do that since I'm unable to do anything with save states on the Sega Genesis Steam emulator. Do you have any suggestions?

@clm I'm totally going to watch the vods of your struggles with my mod. I'm really glad you enjoyed it and congratulations on beating it!

I finished this Mod today and let me say. It is incredible. Hard Mode really is a good description for it. The final fight against Dark Dragon was absolutely insane and I loved it. The only fight that frustrated me was the Kane fight because he dodged like 2/3 of my attacks and that made me a little bit salty.^^ I streamed the whole thing so if someone wants to check out some fights you can look into the vods @ twitch.tv/wombatdanceparty Cheers
