The Poetic Edda

The Poetic Eddas are the oral literature of Iceland, which were finally written down from 1000 to 1300 CE. The Eddas are a primary source for our knowledge of ancient Norse pagan beliefs. The poems are great tragic literature, with vivid descritions of the emotional states of the protagonists, Gods and heroes alike. Women play a prominent role in the Eddic age, and many of them are delineated as skilled warriors.

The impact of these sagas from a sparsely inhabited rocky island in the middle of the Atlantic on world culture is wide-ranging. Wagners' operas are largely based on incidents from the Edda, via the Niebelungenlied. J.R.R. Tolkien also plundered the Eddas for atmosphere, plot material and the names of many characters in The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings. -- John Bruno Hare

The translation of the Eddas by Henry Adams Bellows in 1923 is highly readable.

The texts can be found online at http://www.sacred-texts.com, including commentary of Henry Adams Bellows.

The Poetic Edda is a 35 volume work that obviously should be available at the College of Winterhold, and can be bought from Urag gro-Shub in the Arcanaeum. He may have 1 or 2 copies of these volumes, but probably not all at the same time. So, you have to go back to Urag gro-Shub several times. He sells the volumes for 30 gold each.

Rev. 3: In this update a book case is available in the Bards College, containing all 35 volumes of the Poetic Edda. You can find this book case in the hall opposite Viarmo's bedroom. If you have also subscribed to "Heimskringla", it's the case to the left.

I think the Poetic Edda nicely fits in the lore of the Elder Scrolls.

NOTE: The phrases ''Name' spake:' are not part of the original texts. Missing lines in the texts are indicated by '[...]'.

'Collecting the Edda' is an unfinished side quest for the Bards College in Solitude. You would have to collect parts of the Poetic Edda from bards that you meet around Skyrim. The quest should be given to you by Giraud Gemane. According to the dialogues in this unfinished quest, each bard should have written his/her own part of the Edda. So, eventually the set would consist of a maximum of 12 parts, since there are 12 bards performing around Skyrim. When you could have collected all part, Giraud's last dialogue refers to the parts as verse.
