"orderly complex" is definitely what I was going for :-)
I really hope they update the editor soon to let you add domino tiles.. I really wanted to give the level a bit more sense of order. As it is, if you fall off the track I intended, you end up improvising.. and while that's ok (I want to leave people with some freedom) it can leave people feeling a little overwhelmed/lost.
Thanks for the feedback about the funnel. I will investigate if there is a way to make that essential. I plan to do another revision in the not too distant future.
The level can make you take a bit to figure out WTF is going on, but I think that's an upside to the level; it's complex, but it makes sense without huge jumbled up nutty kind of complex. It's an orderly complex, even if that's not how it appears.
Overall, I enjoyed the level, as I thought it was gonna be the aforementioned "nutty" kind of complex level, requiring all kinds of crazy stuff to happen in sequence at the right time. I like the idea of multiple ways to do things, and openess of execution and sequence is something I use in my level design.
Thumbs up from me, and you know what? I'm gonna favorite this one. I've played probably somewhere around 70 or more singleplayer PeTI levels alone, and I've only favorited two, so thanks for the level!
I found your video very interesting because you found ways of getting around I did not know about.. but that's ok, I deliberately wanted to leave this level quite open, for variety. But I know this overwhelms some people.
I think what will make this level better is when we have access to the little 1/2/3 dominoes to indicate what order things should be attempted in... that will help a lot.
I'm suspending improvements on this level for the time being, until they give us more options to guide the player (i really don't want to put it "on rails").
Congratulations, you are the first person to solve all the puzzles more or less as intended! - in other words deal with the droids, then ascend for the sphere, use the sphere to gain access to the light bridge, then use light bridges & companion cube to turn on the funnel, then use the funnel to ascend to the faith plate, then position the laser cube remotely from the exit.
I can see that you struggled in a couple of places (e.g. when you didn't know about the funnel, or how to get back to the companion cube receptacle platform). I guess I need to make some of these things more obvious.
Here is the intended solution, let me know what you think, it should make more sense now: solution video
I didn't really feel like I knew what I was doing most of the time, I was doing a lot of stuff but I didn't know why.
This is from an earlier version of the level, you found a number of shortcuts and you also found the easter egg ... Try it again with the new version, you won't be able to use those same shortcuts.
I also have a solution video now if you or anyone else wants to see it.
Alex
I'll have a video ready soon :P first on to your other map.
Live streaming is a great way to minimize file management indeed but you need a pretty decen't computer to get some decent quality. If you've got that down then there's really no downside to it.
Since I don't have that great of a computer I prefer the .dem way of doing things (however I did find out that for some reason I couldn't open files made by others, I could do this in other source games, which leads me to think it may have to do with editing maps and then the file versions not matching so you may wanna keep that in mind) but still, I'd recommend always recording a .dem if you intend to do a review, backups are a great thing :P
Anyhow, I'll give the map another playthrough now and I'll see where I end up.
- Made it physically impossible to reach the exit without using the intended route.
- Hid the easter egg a bit better.
- Made it impossible to use the laser without using the cube.
- A couple of minor cosmetic/playability tweaks following my own user testing.
I think the level is a lot more challenging now and I expect it's pretty much impossible to progress through the level without doing the puzzles.
More videos and feedback please!
DR3AM, Nagrom, I am now set up with twitch tv / camtwist / soundflower / adobe media encoder.. so I should be able to do some playthroughs myself.
