SpaceEngine is a scientifically accurate and photorealistic 3D space simulator that models the entire Universe. It lets you explore any object that can be found in space - stars and galaxies, planets and moons, asteroids and comets, black holes and neutron stars. You may fly between the mountains on an alien planet, watch the sunrise and dancing aurora, then take off and fly to a neighboring moon to land in a huge crater. You may leave the solar system and fly through billions of stars, each of which is a fully modeled planetary system with hundreds of objects - planets, moons, and asteroids. You may approach and land on each and every celestial body and see its 3D landscape. You can even pilot starships and atmospheric shuttles. You may go out from our Galaxy and choose any of billions of other galaxies to explore.

Currently SpaceEngine is the first interactive science-based planetarium with procedural generation used for unknown areas and photorealistic graphics, awailable for Windows. Our first goal is improve the planetarium's capabilities - you can learn about planned features here[forum.spaceengine.org]. Our second goal is to make an online space exploration game, where players may control huge starships and explore the Universe, collect resources, build new ships and colonies, and share discoveries and technology with each other. Game mechanics in a realistic virtual Universe will be realistic too - read more below.

SpaceEngine planetarium capabilities:
  • Astronomy
    All types of celestial objects are represented: galaxies, nebulae, stars and star clusters, planets and moons, comets and asteroids. Known celestial objects are represented using data from catalogs: galaxies (NGC/IC), stars (HIPPARCOS), star clusters, nebulae, and planets (Solar System data and known extrasolar planets database). Uncharted regions of space feature procedurally generated objects: galaxies, stars, star clusters, nebulae and planetary systems.
  • Controls
    The observer is free to move around the universe. Transition between any celestial body and any scale occurs seamlessly. Moving in space is done using the WASD keys, like in First Person Shooters. "Select and fly" autopilot: click on any object with the mouse and hit the 'G' key to automatically go directly to the object. Automatic binding of the observer to a moving object and automatic selection of optimum flight speed. Time control: ability to accelerate, decelerate, or reverse the flow of time.
  • Graphics
    Volumetric 3D models of galaxies and nebulae with interstellar dust clouds, 3D landscapes of planets and stars: for many Solar System bodies actual data from space probes is used; for uncharted and procedural planets the surface is generated procedurally on the GPU. Realistic atmospheric scattering (code by Eric Bruneton). Animated cloud layers, water surface, aurora lights and comet tails. Lighting effects: lens flares, solar eclipse shadows, shadows of planetary rings.
  • Physics
    Realistic and physically-based generation of procedural objects (galaxies, star systems, planets) and their physical properties (mass, radius, temperature, atmospheric parameters, etc). The orbital motion of planets, moons and stars in multiple star systems is calculated in real time. Realistic space ship design concepts and physics: orbital motion, atmospheric flight model, hyperjumps, collision detection (under development). Pilot's control panel and Heads Up Display.
  • Sound
    Original background music made by many authors with context-responsive playback. Sound effects for planetary environments and space ships are in development.
  • Tools
    Search for celestial objects by name and search for the nearest star systems. Scalable map of the Universe and planetary system browser. Saving, exporting and importing locations that can be shared between users. Autopilot's journal logs which objects you visited. Built-in wiki system with descriptions of many known objects. Displaying of orbital paths of celestial objects, their labels and markers and other tools.
  • Multilanguage
    Currently SpaceEngine is available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian and European Portuguese, Dutch, Finnish, Swedish, Croatian, Romanian, Czech, Polish, Slovak, Russian and Turkish languages. Many new localizations are under development.
  • Modding
    Importing user addons: catalogs, models and textures for deep space objects, planets and space ships. A huge pack of ultra-high resolution textures for Earth, Mars, Moon and other Solar system bodies is available on the website. A lot of space ships from various sci-fi franchises are imported by the community and are available for download on the website.

The Game - future gameplay:

  • Spaceflights
    Use Newtonian physics for interplanetary flights - computing orbits, acceleration/deceleration burns, landing on planets and taking off, docking with mothership or space station. All can be done using autopilot or manual controls.
  • Explore
    Use telescopes, radars, spectrometers, etc. to obtain data about stars and planets from a distance. Map a planetary surface with orbital satellites. Deploy landing probes, take ground/water/air samples. Drive remote controlled rovers. Land on a planet in an aerospace shuttle, fly over the surface with aircraft-like controls, walk in a space-suit, drive in a rover, and use ground buildings.
  • Harvest
    Collect hydrogen from the upper atmosphere of a gas giant with a magnetic ram-scoop, or mine water ice on icy moons or comets. Build an orbital fuel station with hydrogen tanks and a fleet of automatic harvesters for quick refueling of your starships. Collect minerals from asteroids and planets and transport them to building sites.
  • Build
    Construct modules for the mothership or an entire ship on orbit using minerals from harvesters and nanoassemblers (nano-robots) or "3D printer". Construct/upgrade mothership with dockable modules. Construct utility ships or small modules in onboard nano factories. Construct ground buildings with nanoassemblers using local materials.
  • Colonize
    Build bases, domes, cities on planets or build space stations. Construct passenger ships and transport NPC citizens to new colonies. Build orbital fuel stations, a fleet of harvesters, orbital factories, etc. Finally, terraform entire planets!
  • Develop
    Import new models and scripts, with moderation on the main site. Develop the scripts for autopilot, defense systems, and warships.
  • Fight
    Fight with other players with realistic physically-based mechanics. No slow car-like speeds, antigravity and force shields, only Newtonian physics on real space scales. Huge space velocities (tens of kilometers per second) and crushing acceleration (tens of "gees"), fire distance of thousands of kilometers. Automatic unmanned combat ships equipped with kinetic weapons, x-ray lasers, and antimatter bullets. Indirect strategy-like control of the fleet, with ability to take direct control of any unit and pilot it manually in first-person or third-person mode.
  • Player-To-Player interaction
    Explore, harvest, build, colonize and fight in cooperation. Help with repair and evacuation. Discover new worlds and give them a name. Trade exploration data, ships, colonies, resources, and new models and scripts.

I tested Nvidia's GeForce Now service and since it works with Steam content only, this is something that REALLY benefits from having the processing done by a high performance computer. I'd really love to see Space Engine available on Steam soon..

Can I be a SpaceEngine tester? I think the latest version is very good, adding a lot of things, more realistic. All of these things have changed a lot, like the 3D nebula, the new terrain engine... Anyway, I wanted to be a tester, and I found that any bug would tell you in time.:steamhappy:
