MDK Cinematic Patch
UPDATE:
The game has now been officially patched with proper support on newer hardware. Thus my patch will no longer include the 3DFX wrapper (it was outdated at this point anyway).

This patch will add some missing content from the Steam release of MDK.

  • Menu Slideshow
Originally the menu had a slideshow which showed credits as well as screenshots from the game. This was missing from the Steam version but this patch re-adds it.

  • Ending Cinematics
A lot of fans like me were disappointed when no Billy Ze Kick music video popped up at the end. This patch adds it again for the proper MDK experience. It also adds a missing cinematic showing Kurt and Bones escaping.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (for setup)
Simply follow the on-screen instructions to install the patch. Make sure it's being installed in your MDK Steam folder. The Setup installs into the default location so if your folder is NOT in the default location you need to manually browse for it, such as if your Steam library is located elsewhere.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (for manual installation)
Open the zip archive using your archive program of choice and extract the contents to your MDK Steam folder (by default it's "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MDK").

TIPS
  • To verify the patch has worked, you should see the menu slideshow if you stay on the main menu screen for a while.
  • Make sure to rebind the keys on the options menu for better controls. Also keep in mind to configure the mouse controls as they support up to 4 mouse buttons (very handy for quick Sniper access)

Well maybe Interplay or Playmates did it. It wouldn't be the first time a different version of a game was re-released later on. One Unit: Whole Blood, for example, contains changes that not even a fully patched version of the base Blood game with both expansions has, such as the intro cinematics being disabled. There are also at least 3 retail versions of Dune II and way more releases of MechWarriors 2 than I can count with both hands. Then there are Sony's Greatest Hits which during the PS2-era sometimes contained additions not found in the original launch version of the game.
The point I'm trying to make though is that the Steam and GOG releases appear to be ripped from two distinct separate CD releases of MDK, with the Steam version coming off as newer since it has a video instead of slides. Why the new owners uploaded different versions of the game on separate platforms is beyond me.

Shiny went out of business long before Steam became used so highly unlikely.

Well of course, what I meant was the Steam version appears to use a newer release/version. Presumably Shiny made it since I doubt the new owners would go through the trouble to add a new intro video and main menu music if they're not also going to at least add native widescreen. Regardless, I found that you can add the new intro videos and main menu theme to the GOG version by swapping out the OPTIONS.BNI with the Steam version's. It's also worth mentioning that doing so will break the music and some sound effects on any preexisting saves made with the original OPTIONS.BNI.
Now that I think about it, I'm not only curious what changes Shiny made between versions and why but also why the IP owners released one version on Steam and a different version on GOG. In fact, that might actually explain why the Steam version lacks the menu slides and ending cinematics; the original retail version they ripped it from probably also lacked them.

Shiny doesn't exist anymore and new IP owners are distributing MDK nowadays.

Thanks for the patch. Ended up buying the GOG version since I was having issues with getting A3D to work and I noticed something. The GOG version has different main menu music and a slide show for the intro logos instead of videos.
I decided to analyse them with WinMerge and found that OPTIONS.BNI in \MISC as well as LEVEL3.CMI, LEVEL3O.MTO, LEVEL5O.SNI, LEVEL6.CMI, LEVEL6O.SNI, LEVEL7.CMI, LEVEL7O.SNI, LEVEL8.CMI and LEVEL8O.SNI in \TRAVERSE are different between versions, with LEVEL8Q.MTI missing from the GOG version. The MDKD3D executables are also different but suspect that might be due to the inclusion of the Steam DRM. All other files check out the same, including the ones in your patch. I wonder what Shiny changed between versions besides the intro slides and main menu theme?
Regardless, turns out the audio issues I was experiencing were due to the A3D wrapper I was using; the A3D-Alchemy/VIA QSound wrapper works and Creative's official wrapper doesn't.

Many thanks for making this patch! I was scared to get this game at first because I heard that they didn't have the ending music video for the game, but now that I found this patch I'll be getting this game the next time it goes on sale!
