Soviet Mortar and Cap Strategy
Por Jhinn
In this guide I will be explaining a strategy I tried in a recent Coh2 match that involves mobility, stealing and mortars. 3v3 4v4
(I'm aiming this guide for intermidiate players)
What you need:
1. A commander with HM-120MM Mortars
Pick any soviet commander that enables you to use HM-120MM Mortars. These are exceptional units for this strategy because combined with other mortars you can clear out concentrations of enemy units/weaken them to retreat, enabling you to grab the point and dig in.
2. Regular soviet mortars or stolen german mortars
Using the regular mortars with the 120mm can offer massive damage.
3. (Optional) Any form of soviet artillery
Good late game weapon to bully facist scum.
4. Ability to micro
Last thing you want to do is lose your 120mm so have a good idea where your units are, as most CoH2 players should already have.
5. Strong love for Soviet Communism

Starting Off
Step 1:
When starting off you want to build the third tier soviet building. I'm not gonna give a specific build order because it really depends on your current situation. In my recent game my build order was this:
Conscript
Maxim
Penal
HM-120mm
2x mortars
---------------
Building Up
Step 2:
Once you get your HM-120mm you want to start pumping out mortars. By "pumping out" I mean get atleast 4 mortars. *Be sure to steal enemy mortars. I rarely steal team weapons but after I used this strat I see how efficient you can be with building up a mortar army.
Aim to have atleast 1-2 120mm, and 3 normal mortars.
*I used control groups 3,4,5
3-120mm
4-soviet mortar
5-steal german mortars

*Don't go all mortars. You'll end up just pissing you teammates off and make them leave. I've seen other players do this and result in a lost. So as much fun as mortars can be, support with armour and infantry.
Mobility and Survivability
Step 3:
Although you may have a mortar army, you aren't doing anything useful if you just stick around at a captured VP. If you see your teamates struggling to hold/capture a vp, send over your army and give the enemy a taste of mortar goodness. But be sure to be careful where you barrage as you may friendly fire allies. Communicate with your teammates if you think a barrage may hit friendly units.
*A sure way to lose your mortars is by pushing aggressively, capping, and keeping them idle. You want your mortars to always be active. A good way to ensure this is to Shift-Click to queue a new position after a barrage. Also don't be afraid to split your army and send each to different locations. Just always have a good idea about where your units are.
To Shift:
-Select mortar
-barrage
-during barrage shift click to another location and the squad should move there after their barrage is finished

*Also keep in mind, the 120mm has a longer range than the regular mortars. When selecting a barrage target, be sure to use your max distance as this will help you relocate and stay hidden for longer.
Late Game
Step 4:
Once you have a stable hold on the VP, try to get some armour up. Mortars are hard to counter armour so a t34 at the vp can'
t hurt. Conscript anti tank grenades can help as well. Do whatever you can to win. A rocket truck is a viable option for heavier barrages. Combined with your mortar army, the rockets and mortars can be deadly. In some cases you could probably deal tons of damage to armour if you calculate carefully.

(Optional) Step 5:
Build an artillery gun to get longer range barrages. This really depends on your current situation. If you are playing against OKW, perhaps some shells into their forward bases could do them good, or an ostheer bunker.
Thank You For Reading
Well I hope this guide helped anybody in need for a strong soviet strategy. Also keep in mind this strategy isn't for everyone. Try it out and change it to suite your play style. please know I am an Intermediate player and am just trying to input new ideas to the community. Hope this helped!

Thanks @partisanPizza glad someone realized that this isn't a guide for winning 100% everytime.

Depends on the map, and having cover behind structures that block direct visibility, using the true sight on your favor and the RNG that decimate models from time to time.

It's a strat. He didn't say it was an expert one. Give the guy a break. Thanks for the write-up. Seems like a good blob killer if you can manage to keep all your units alive.

I recently played a match as Wehrmacht and found that the only true way to counter the mortars are if the mortar player has a no awareness of where and when they are barraging. During my recent game we found 5 squads of mortars who refused to retreat, resulting In a rather successful rocket barrage. Personally this is one of the many reasons why I would never use British Forces for this strat due to their static mortar pits and lack of mobility. Even though the Brits have the land mattress, I would much rather have the ability to retreat.

if axis cant counter howitzers, howitzers are usually very strong - if used at the right time and right location obviously

okw players wont like it if their bases are 24/7 under heavy howitzer shell attacks

@LuckySora your teammate is one of many dumbasses who can't play with the team. Obviously if you see your teammates struggling to hold a point either support them with arty or just stop going for artillery or armour. I've gotten into games where 3 other people were spamming mortars. Not helpful.

I saw my soviet team mate spaming 120mm mortars. He was abosultely uncoopretive. He was only holding 1 normal point. Not even FUEL or VP. Just ONE freaking normal point. Though I suppose all tactics like this one, need a coopretive/good player. But using Soviet and focusing on artilery is a miss opportunity. I have never seen a game, where artilery change the balance of a battle. (Maybe the German walking stukas rockets). But artilery units as a whole is really cheap and weak. Because so many german tactics can counter this.
