The grill is there so you can't just drop the cube through it. It adds a bit of challenge.

Because beneath that grill lies a trove of suppressed traumatic memories of testing and breaking the chamber in horrible and unspeakable ways. The exact details escape me now, but what matters is that as long as the grill is there, I can sleep soundly at night.
