Description
Naev is a game about space exploration, trade and combat. Players travel the galaxy and earn money by trading, fighting and performing missions.

Note: this game is free, open source software and can freely be obtained from SourceForge, but we think that Steam Greenlight would be an excellent way to reach out to new players who might otherwise never hear of this game.
Download the game here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/naev/files/

Main features:
  • A large galaxy with hundreds of planets and moons to explore.
  • Real-time, semi-Newtonian gameplay reminiscent of the Escape Velocity games.
  • Many different ships to buy and pilot, and many ways to customize each of them.
  • Multiple factions, each with unique ship designs and personalities.
  • Open-source, meaning ultimate freedom of modding.
Currently Naev is a playable game, but it is far from being a complete one. To further mature the game, we, the developers, need you. Yes, you. All it takes is the motivation to be creative in some way! Probably the easiest way to help, as well as one of the most valuable ones, is by coming up with new stories for the game, and by shaping those stories into playable missions. Other ways to help include making art or sounds, improving gameplay via balancing work, or (if you have the ability) even a bit of coding on the main program.

For those interested, we have a wiki (http://wiki.naev.org/wiki/Main_Page), a forum (http://forum.naev.org/), an IRC channel (http://blog.naev.org/chat/) and a blarg (http://blog.naev.org/). Everyone is welcome to stop by and say hi!

A few things to keep in mind:
  • This game is a hobby project, not an indie development project. There is no final plan, no time frame for the "finished game".
  • The dev team does not accept monetary donations, only direct contributions to the game itself.
  • This game is compliant with the Debian Free Software Guidelines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian_Free_Software_Guidelines). We ask that all contributions be licensed accordingly.
  • The game engine is written in C. Missions are written in Lua.
  • No, there is no multiplayer, and there probably won't be. Unless you add it!

Hate to bear bad news, but if you check the comments on the Naev dev blog about greenlight, BTAxis reveals that development has stopped on the game due to lack of contributions. http://blog.naev.org/2012/09/naev-on-steam-greenlight/#comments It's rather disappointing because I think this game had a future. It sounds like if there are people with the skills and drive to contribute that further progress could be made though, to all you programmers out there.

Glad you guys are trying to get Greenlit. Been playing the game for awhile now and love it.

By the way, whoever was complaining about the UI being too plain and unproffesional, there are items in the game that you can buy that will reskin the UI. Also, imho, the mechanics in this game may be similar to EV. But all in all, I Ithink I like this game more due to the time acceleration when traveling over long distances, makes missions and trading much more efficient and profitable which makes that style of play much more feasible.

Definitely- saw this on a "WHY THE BLOODY HELL AREN'T THEY MAKING EV4!??!?!?" thread. Make the graphics up to EVN standards at least, and then I'd be all in.

I have been subsisting off of EV NOVA since high school, seeing as how it's been a good 10 years since, it's high time something continued in the same vein.

This game is great for anyone who played old school space sims back in the day. My only complaint is the music...it sounds like a cheap 80's porn.

I have played EV, Overdrive and NOVA more than is legally allowed in Canada, so I am psyched someone is trying to keep the proverbial torch burning. If I had any coding skills, I would contribute every waking moment, however all I have are massive forearms, so I will instead give you the manliest fist-pump possible.

I hope you and the Naev-Team will work on Naev during the Summer Holidays

I was a big fan of the original EV games. It's good to see that someone's at least trying to continue the legacy.
