Naev is a game about space exploration, trade and combat. Players travel the galaxy and earn money by trading, fighting and performing missions.

Note: this game is free, open source software and can freely be obtained from SourceForge, but we think that Steam Greenlight would be an excellent way to reach out to new players who might otherwise never hear of this game.
Download the game here:

Main features:
  • A large galaxy with hundreds of planets and moons to explore.
  • Real-time, semi-Newtonian gameplay reminiscent of the Escape Velocity games.
  • Many different ships to buy and pilot, and many ways to customize each of them.
  • Multiple factions, each with unique ship designs and personalities.
  • Open-source, meaning ultimate freedom of modding.
Currently Naev is a playable game, but it is far from being a complete one. To further mature the game, we, the developers, need you. Yes, you. All it takes is the motivation to be creative in some way! Probably the easiest way to help, as well as one of the most valuable ones, is by coming up with new stories for the game, and by shaping those stories into playable missions. Other ways to help include making art or sounds, improving gameplay via balancing work, or (if you have the ability) even a bit of coding on the main program.

For those interested, we have a wiki (, a forum (, an IRC channel ( and a blarg ( Everyone is welcome to stop by and say hi!

A few things to keep in mind:
  • This game is a hobby project, not an indie development project. There is no final plan, no time frame for the "finished game".
  • The dev team does not accept monetary donations, only direct contributions to the game itself.
  • This game is compliant with the Debian Free Software Guidelines ( We ask that all contributions be licensed accordingly.
  • The game engine is written in C. Missions are written in Lua.
  • No, there is no multiplayer, and there probably won't be. Unless you add it!

It's because the URL generated by Steam includes the parentheses, for some reason.

I clicked on the 4 urls in the game description above that starts as "For those interested, we have wiki..."

All of them bring me to nothing. Not sure why.

We're still around, but we're not affiliated with Endless Sky in any way.
Zachita Nov 4, 2015 @ 5:44pm
As Endless Sky was just released the other day, I was wondering if your project was still in the works and or if you had colabbed with them or anything. I'm still hopeful on a community made EV4! :D

Thanks for the update Frozen. I will have to check out things in the updated form :D

I always love getting a chance to drive my escape velocity nostalgia train! haha

Also of note, if you are a die hard fan of Escape Velocity, you should check the Ambrosia forums and support someone named Delphi in making EV Delphi. It's a tc that completely remakes EV with amazing new graphics, a different in depth fighting system, whole new map/governments. It's not released yet, but if there was ever going to be a successor to EV Nova, it would be this TC. Check it out and try and show some support on those old forums.
