Melody's Escape: New Video!
  • New animations. I've changed/fixed most animations (especially the roll and jumps) that didn't feel right, now they are much smoother and have some more "weight" to them. I've also added smooth transitions between movement animations for each intensity changes.

  • Upgraded the music engine to supports low BPMs (60 to 80) songs (which are mostly calm/sad songs). I've re-used the same song as in my last video to demonstrate the lower tempo speed, hence the easier gameplay. The engine now supports songs from 60 to 180BPM (in 4/4 timing), providing even better overall accuracy.

  • A new background, the city (which still needs to be animated to react to the music). The game will have a different background for each intensity mode, the city is only one of four.

  • Changed/added visual clues to be something else than just colors, which improves reactivity and also allows colorblind people to play the game. Colors can also be edited in the game settings, should you want to change them.

I'm now concentrating on the last intensity mode, flying, which isn't up to par with my vision yet (and hence not shown in the video).

Thanks for all your support and constructive criticism!

Melody's Escape: New video! (Now with BPM detection)
Description
Release date: SUMMER 2013
Melody's Escape is a rhythm/runner PC game where you provide the music from your personal library, to generate a unique synched game experience, with an obstacle course defined by the beats of your songs and with movement speed tied to the energy level of the music at any given time.
___

The game is divided in 4 types of gameplay variations, depending of your music's energy level: walking, jogging, running and flying, translating in the game the urges that you feel when listening to music while walking with headphones on your head.

Unlike most rhythm games, a special focus has been set on long held notes from voices, string instruments or even dubstep wubwubs, allowing the player to really feel beautiful and powerful voices and instruments directly in their actions, and allowing for a huge range of music genres to be enjoyed equally, whether you like fast-paced heavy music or calm and relaxing ones!

Melody's Escape also features fast and accurate tempo detection (BPM), with the same accuracy as most DJ softwares, allowing for extremely good synchronisation to the rhythm of your music.

The game is still in development with new additions everyday, so please check back often on the progress if you like the game!

Additional features currently planned and not shown in the trailers:
  • Various difficulty modes, if you want to enjoy your music casually or with hardcore reflexes
  • Score and multiplier
  • Tons of eye-candy and particle effects (I wanted to focus on the core gameplay experience first)
  • Online score leaderboards
  • New backgrounds for each gameplay variation, with background animation based on the music

Actually, non-commercial is an optional license add-on for the Creative Commons license as a whole. In other words; if it's not on the license, then it is available for commercial use.

The Creative Commons (CC) license is typically divided into six categories:
CC Attribution: Use however you like, as long as you give credit
CC Attribution Share-Alike: Attribution, plus derived products must have this same license
CC Attribution No-Derivatives: Attribution, plus this product cannot be manipulated, remixed, or built-upon
CC Attribution Non-Commercial: Attribution, plus this product cannot be used for commercial gain
CC Attribution Non-Commercial Share-Alike
CC Attribution Non-Commercial No-Derivatives

So you'd have to be careful to look for which license is being used, but there is certainly plenty of music available for commercial use. Sorry if I seemed pushy or anything, but I hope that clears things up. c:

I will consider other platforms once the game is released on PC, if the income allows me to continue working on games.

Thanks for the link, but the license does not allow commercial use.

I was curious about one thing - I don't know if it's been asked before, but I'd love to see this game hit Linux or Android. Depending on the success of the PC version, do you think you'd try to arrange to see this game on other platforms?
And maybe even an arrangement with the Humble Bundle team could help it spread around?

Also, to help answer a previous question, Jamendo is a good source for legally free music from across the world, with the right Creative Commons license (Attribution only), it could be possible to look for more usable trailer music. Here's a link, if you're interested!

I could of sworn I said this already, but I can't seem to find my comment... anyway I just would like to know/suggest if there could be a "peaceful" option (or whatever you would like to call it) Where I can just listen to the music.

I'm glad to see this game is going to make it on steam, If I had to pick a top 5 on greenlight so far, this one would be in it.

@Vekter Since this is a commercial projet, it's quite complicated to find music with a license permitting such use (while being at the same time interesting for trailer purposes).
I'm working very hard to finish all the gameplay parts, so hopefully I will have a beta out soon.
