Basic Carry Guide (New Player-2k Player)
By espresso depresso
One of the more popular roles, carry relies on knowing what your hero is able to do at different stages of the game and reading the situation. This guide only looks at the safe lane, since usually at 2k or below you don't have the carry anywhere else.

Please Note
This guide is NOT for people above 2k. This guide is not in depth. It is meant to help new players understand the carry role a bit better. The key to playing your role well is understanding it. This guide is NOT going to tell you when you should do certain things at certain times on certain characters. I give you an overview of the carry role so you can figure out what you need to do in certain situations yourself.

For example if I'm playing Terrorblade and I know from this guide that he is immobile and he has other units he can use, you can play Terrorblade accordingly and play safer. You can also decide if you are able to pick a riskier hero against their line up.

This is meant to be a small and basic guide, not something you can always look to for playing carry perfectly. Go to a guide from a 7k for things like that.
What is a carry?
A carry is a hero that needs to get items and levels before he can start to affect the game significantly. Most of the time carrys will go in the safe lane so they are... safer. Most carrys can't play very agressively in the early game due to their power being better scaled into the late game.
Farming and Positioning
Farming is how a carry gets his items. Getting last hits on creeps or heroes will grant them experience and gold to get items faster and unlock more of their abilities. Different carrys have different farming patterns so here are some simple categories you can follow.

Mobile Heroes
These are heroes that have an escape they can use to take risky farm. They can play more aggressively in how they farm due to an easy escape mechanism. This means they can farm on the enemies side of the map without as much risk.
This includes heroes like Anti Mage with his blink, Clinkz with his skeleton walk or Juggernaut with his blade fury.
These types of heroes are more for beginner carry players.

Immobile Heroes
These are heroes that don't have an easy escape. This means they have to farm a lot safer than other heroes. These heroes should play in areas where they can be helped by their teammates easily or they have lots of vision and can react to danger. You can itemize to keep yourself safer with items like force staff/hurricane pike, blink dagger or shadowblade.
This includes heroes like Drow Ranger, Gyrocopter and Terrorblade.
These types of hereos are for medium skill carry players.

Micromanagement Heroes
These are heroes that focus on microing their units to farm more efficiently. Their use of other units to farm usually means that they don't have much mobility and these heroes can also be put in the immobile category. This means these heroes should be careful where they position themselves, like with the immobile heroes but they can use their other units to take riskier farm aswell.
These are heroes like Naga siren, Terrorblade and Lone Druid.
These types of heroes are for advanced skill carry players.
Reading situations
As a carry the worst thing you can do is die. This includes not fighting with your team so you can survive and get more farm. You should always be carrying a town portal scroll. Use this to escape tricky situations or get to another part of the map with more farm. Always be looking around the map for missing enemies. If 1 or more enemy heroes are missing you should be thinking, "who are they and what is their kill potential on me?" If the heroes missing have a high kill potential on you, then back into a safer area of the map, like the jungle or a warded area. If they don't have a kill potential on you then you have the choice of staying in a riskier place to get more farm or to back off and play safely anyway. Also look around for any teamfights taking place. If you can keep an eye out for a teamfight you can join and get a kill if you think you can. It's not worth you dying for 1 kill. Never go into a fight in the early stages of the game unless you are sure you wont die and you will get something out of it. If you don't think you can get something from the teamfight try and get an objective for your team like destroying a tower. Always be looking for the most usefull thing you can be doing for yourself and the team. When you are learning a hero it is okay to die a few times to learn the maximum your hero can do. Learning your limits is the best way to get better as a carry.
Early, Mid and Late Game Summary
Early Game 1-20 mins
In the early game you want to be farming as much as you can, getting as much gold and experience as possible in the first 10-20 minutes of the game. Always be looking for kill opportunities and the most amount of farm.

Mid Game 20-45 mins
At this point you're going to start coming online. You still want to be farming but you should be with your team more, playing to take objective like towers or roshan or getting kills. Be careful not to waste time walking around with your team not getting something out of it. You should still be careful of who can kill you but you should be able to pick off a few enemies here or there.

Late Game 45 mins+
This is when you are at your best. The only other people able to contest your strength should be the enemy carry. This is when you should stop focusing on farming and start focusing on not dying. Your death could lead to the enemies winning the game. Play with your team all the time. Look for pick offs and push for objectives. Try and save your money for buyback aswell, just incase you die. Look to take control over roshan aswell. The aegis is a great advantage to have on you in the late game. Especially with the healing of the cheese aswell.
