Overview

What is “Pillars of History”?
An engaging mix of Action, RPG and Quest gameplay dressed in the beauty of the medieval European history. What sets this game apart from other RPG titles is the unique Lore system, which practically is an interactive educational course on medieval history in the form of a full-scale RPG game.

Our goal is to develop a RPG game of a new type, with a strong emphasis on learning. Thus we aim at the best possible gameplay balance. "Pillars of History" will introduce an unique mix between entertainment and education that will set this game at its righteous place in the gamer`s heart. Combine this with world-class storytelling, action combat system, endless artifacts and you're in for a ride!

Setting

The game is set in early Middle Ages around the 8th century. Most of the events take place on the Balkans. Quests in the game are spread across the territory of the Eastern Roman Empire (known as Byzantine Empire), The First Bulgarian Empire, the Avar Khaganate and the numerous Slavic Tribes.

The Players will have the opportunity to immerse into the history of a world long forgotten. Yet setting a game in a world deprived of Magic & Dragons brings both Pros and Cons. Coming up with an interesting story is more challenging but when you succeed the result is undoubtedly magnificent. In the end - let’s always remember that the real world is usually more interesting than any imagination.

The game goes through a number of different locations, designed to reveal a realistic story of the life through the 8th century. Trading towns, Fortifications, Ancient Slavic temples, Cities, Artifacts and Lore from the middle ages - we have `em all!
We assure you the story of “Pillars of History” will drive its path through many mysteries, epic stories and amazing lore to keep the player’s interest for AGES!

Gameplay

The player chooses a character to his/her liking and after the initial setup jumps into the reality of the medieval Balkans. The map is divided into regions relating to different locations - forests, mountains, towns, trading roads, etc. The player explores these locations gradually unfolding the story of the game. The character communicates, fights, trades, gathers, explores and interacts with the world in different ways.

All game actions are in Real Time. The gameplay includes also a survival element. For example: the need of rest and food. Special mechanics will be applied to healing the damage and injuries the player’s character will suffer.

The character can use different weapons, armor and artifacts when facing the game challenges. There are many quest-specific items in the game, as well as the need of proper equipment at all times in order to survive in the harsh world of the early middle ages.

Every Character has different set of Active/Passive abilities and basic stats distribution. This kind of approach will allow for a more action-oriented combat. Still the main focus of the gameplay won’t be the combat but rather the exploration, lore and knowledge. Communicating with NPCs, revealing mysteries and completing quests will be emphasised and rewarding.

The players have the option to choose between 7 different characters with their own backstory and personality. Not only this choice will define the way players interact with the game but also it will directly affect how the game story will unfold.
Gender and personality will certainly open certain gates while closing others. This way the game will allow for an increased replayability and it will make the world of “Pillars of History” feel more real and diverse.
Right now we have 2 bulgarians, 2 byzantine, 2 slavic and 1 thracian Characters in the game. If you want you can also create a totally custom one according to your own taste.

Graphics

The game is shown through a classical perspective camera. The environment as well as the characters in the game are fully 3D. The aim is to be as realistic as possible without overdoing it - in the end this is a game and we need to keep things readable through the screen.

Hello, @Arcatera! "Pillars of History" gives you a lot of opportunities throughout the game. You will be able to follow the story of seven premade characters, but you also can customize your own based on your preferences. Of course, the stories won't be linear at all. Each player will forge it's own way. If you want to know more about the dialogues in the game and how some character attributes affect them, you can check out our development blog. Thank you and we wish you a great day! :))

Actually, game reminds me "Age of Decadence" - another indie RPG, which was pretty cool. Do you plan make your game such dialog-heavy and non-linear or more like "Baldur's Gate"?

Thank you for this comment! It's too early for participating in Greenlight for us, but we want to collect as much feedback as we can in order to develop a better gaming experience.

Now THIS is how you put something on greenlight. Lots of information, and also you appear to be doing pretty well so far from the screenshots. It looks rich and full of promise and I appluade you for waiting till this stage to put this up instead of promoting barely started crap.

Looks very interesting. I love when games also help educate you on the history and time it relates to.
