Perseco's Software Mod [Alpha 9+]

Note: This is currently just an early testing version of my mod. More features, balance tweaks, and bug fixes are to be expected. Feedback is much appreciated.

Note 2: This mod will NOT be compatible with any other mod that has software with dependencies on the base game's Operating System, Office Software, or 2D Editor, as the default features have been replaced.

I have been working on a new mod that overhauls the default software types and updates name generation. Currently, only Operating Systems, Office Software and 2D Editor have undergone significant changes. Once all of the default software types are updated, I will start adding more new software types.

There are some known issues with the new name generators mixing with the base game generators. I'm still looking into why it is doing that, but it may be an Alpha 9 bug. There is also a known issue where the AI creates far more game engines than is necessary.

I'm currently looking for feedback on any bugs, text errors, or imbalances you may encounter.

That's my favorite mod - it makes the game so much more grindy. I love it!

Development on this project has been halted until the feature system has been overhauled. You can read more about it here:

I had the same problem as described by Little Boy Baby. As soon as you use this mod, some categories like 2D Editor in creating software menu are not existing. By deactivating it and starting new game, they show up.
-> After looking through the modding files, they will unlock at later dates (e.g. 1981/1995 etc.)

The real issue are the missing/messed up categories like GameEngine, Antivirus, Game etc.
I solved that after seeing through some working and not working files and found a difference.
->Adding a short line of code in each of the mod files fixed everything:

Go to your steamapps/workshop/content/362620/876376417/SoftwareTypes folder
and open each .xml file, which is not working correctly ingame.

Replace only the first line of code at the start </SoftwareType> with <SoftwareType Override="True"> and save the file.

Ingame all things are now correctly displayed.

@Perseco-> Please look into this and fix it if possible. Thanks

Is this mod still being updated?

The server bandwidth for an Office Software release that has online support and online software updates uses about 9.3Gbps with about 50k users in 2003. The internet bill for that is about 400,000 usd a month which isn't sustainable unless you are selling the software for hundreds of dollars (which you shouldn't have too). Both those features uses over 10 times the amount of bandwidth that a Game's Multiplayer and MMO use. As a result of this, the actually AI companies cannot keep up the costs of running the servers for the software resulting in low numbers of users on OSs and Office Software. The AI will also cancel because their regular sales don't cover the costs of paying the player to host the software on their own servers. the server requiresments should be much lower, realistically not all of the active users would be hitting an online support page at the same time through every month.

1. Can you be more specific about the server requirements? What is the bandwidth being used, how many servers do you have, what do the upkeep costs look like, etc?

2. The NAS description will be corrected in the next update.

3. The Multitasking feature was removed because it is has no real place in the structure. Thus, it is implied by the interface options after GUI.

I've found some issues so far. The server requirements for certain features in Operating Systems and Office Software are too high, resulting in unsustainable internet costs. The Network Attached Storage feature in Operating Systems also has an incorrect description. The Multitasking feature is also missing, probably important. On the Public Beta feature, I'm not sure if the Unlock syntax is necessary with the software category unlock dates. Good job so far though.
