Utah Railway Coal (Hard Pull To Summit)

Utah Rwy has been hauling coal in east central Utah to an interchange with the Union Pacific in Provo, Utah since 1917. Utah Rwy was formed when its Parent Company United States Fuel Co, a subsidary of United States Smelting Co., was dissatisfied with the Rio Grande's inability to cycle empties back to their mines. At the time the Rio Grande was saddled with the financial burden of building the Western Pacific Rwy, and had been locked out of the California Markets by a deal involving the Union Pacific and the Southern Pacific. Therefore, the Rio Grande, lacked the locomotives to fill the demand. The Utah Rwy then built a line parallel to the Rio Grande's Soldier Summit Grade From Near Helper to Provo, Utah. A trackage Rights agreement was reached with the Rio Grande, Utah Rwy was happy to pay to use Rio Grandes grade To Provo as opposed to the proposed line though Thistle. Directional trackage rights whereas Rio Grande owned and maintained the Westbnound Main while Utah Rwy Owned and maintained the Eastbound Main. The Utah Rwy was known (and is still today, though owned by Gennessee & Wyoming Industries), for pulling heavy coal trains with rather odd choices of locomotives. In this scenerio it is 1985 and you have an extreamly heavy Utah Rwy Unit coal train led by Ex BN F45's bound for Provo out of the Martin Yard. Turn up your speakers and listen to classic EMD High Horsepower F45's Notch Out as they pull the Eastern 3% grades to Soldier Summit.
