New Dev Diary

Ari's first ever Dev Diary! He talks about the interaction system. With your help and feedback, we believe the game plays better than ever! Note: Ari looks like he's eating an invisible sandwich =P. Next Dev Diary from Ari will be about the Inventory/Crafting System.

The Lighthouse is Feature Complete!!

Yay! We are feature complete on The Lighthouse! What does this mean? This means that all of the "Must Have" features and components of the game (Audio Managers, Inventory Systems, Interactions, Movement, etc..) are all complete. We hope to be in Beta* in two months and are working hard to check off all of our "Want to Haves" from our Backlog! (*This Meaning the game is playable from start to finish with placeholder art used liberally)

Demo v.1.3.0

Our new demo is almost complete and we can't wait to share it with all of you. This version of demo v.1.3.0 more accurately represents how the game will look and play. There's still a lot of polish left so things will only look better from here. We plan on releasing demo v.1.3.0 on Steam and also again on our website.

Whats new in Demo v.1.3.0?

The demo has been updated with all of our newest gameplay features like inventory system, interaction system, crouch, ambient audio system, door system, crafting system, etc. We also hid an easter egg in the demo and cant wait to see who will find it first. ;)

When will it be available?

We plan on releasing demo v.1.3.0 at the same time that we re-launch our new Kickstarter campaign, though we will release it to our original backers much sooner so you can be the first to enjoy it and give feedback.

Coming back to Kickstarter!

We plan on coming back to Kickstarter end of June or sometime in July. As soon as we have a solid date we will let everyone know. We won't stop building this game, so it's our job now to make it the best it can be with the resources we have. Crowdfunding the The Lighthouse will allow us to make our original vision come to life. Trust us, we have a grand vision and we would love nothing more than to see it come alive!

New SKS Logo Splash Screen

It's funny and sad, but we had an amazing artist [Benedick Bana] custom draw each Shadow Knight for our company and we dropped the ball by making the ugliest Splash Screen in the history of video games. =P Sorry Benedick... So, If you can't tell, we hated our old Splash Screen and we took some time to update it. Let us know what you think? It's still a work in progress but on boot up, you'll randomly see 1 of the possible 3 different Knights from our Studio. (It's random and represents each person who is working on The Lighthouse, so it'll be different on each boot up). Yes, we know we have more important things to work on, but we're happy with the much needed change.

Check out the new splash screens here

Game Progress

Development is going smoothly and we are living and breathing this game. We are at that point now where our sprints are getting loaded with way more work than we would be able to complete this time last year- which is good news because we're becoming masters at UE4. We're all working night and day to make this an amazing thriller, we even scare ourselves sometimes.

What are we currently working on?

-Optimizing the game so we have the best graphic quality and performance [we're aiming for a 970gtx to get at least 60 fps while in 2k on EPIC settings.

-More custom assets for the final game. We have a unique 3d modeler in mind that we want to contract that we are trying to pull together funds for.

-Finishing Designing and play testing each unique puzzle.

-Building the next levels [ it's not all in a house after-all ]

Upcoming Events

The Shadow Knights Team will be attending E3 this year to mingle and enjoy the festivities. If any of you will be going, we would love to meet up with you. Just let us know!

Regal Con June 24th & June 25th

We will have a booth at Regal Con and will be showing off a VR version of The Lighthouse. If you're in the area, be sure and stop by to see us. []

Last week we posted a comment with some questions that we needed feedback on, and Laracroft had a great suggestion of creating a survey. So here it is. :)

April Update
Gameplay Features

Inventory System

We’ve mentioned the inventory system before but we're now ready to share some more details.

Inventory Features:

-Store items [ You don’t say, is that what an inventory system does? ]
-Learn more details about an item with the inventory description [ Yup, that too ]
-Go back and read diary entries [ A Fan Favorite ]
-Crafting system - combine items to create a new item [ Seriously?! Never heard of that one before ]

The inventory system will be included in our new version of the Alpha demo for all of you to try! As usual not everything is finalized.

Interaction System

We’ve spent weeks watching people play the original demo and we’ve noticed many gamers were having trouble targeting/mousing over many items in the game. We’ve iterated on the interaction system and we believe we’ve improved the mechanics to be more intuitive and responsive. It feels more natural for beginners and allows twitch based gamers to get the feedback they need when they demand it.

Interaction Features:

-Marker for Gamepad or Mouse in 3d space is now over an object that you can interact with.
-Instead of answering questions in a menu, you can now press a button to quickly answer a question.
-You no longer have to look directly at an object to bring it to focus.

Updated Alpha Demo

We will be releasing an updated alpha demo, that includes a stable version of the new features. We will post an update once it's available.

Irvine's Daughter Lily

February 19th is an important anniversary for Irvine, as it was the day he lost his first born, Lily, to cancer 7 years before. Every year, he would visit her, place a yellow lily and lit candle on her gravestone and watch it burn until it was extinguished. This tradition had never been broken.

We have a VIVE!

We've always wanted to have The Lighthouse working on the VIVE, and we now have one to test on. We will be working on making The Lighthouse compatible with the Vive.

We will have more updates on this soon.

Kickstarter Plans

We've gained an amazing community of supporters (Knights) and we have been hard at work on The Lighthouse and we are doing our best to complete it by October. In order to get the game where we want it to be ( Art, Sound and Polish wise ) we will need to come back to Kickstarter for some additional support. We want to work with all of you to create a great campaign with reward tiers that are meaningful and exciting. With that being said, let us know what rewards you would like to see.

Additional Updates

We have a forum on Feel free to post feedback, suggestions, and discussions about The Lighthouse on the indieDB forum. We will check in periodically and answer any questions you may have.

Thank you all for your continued support. We will be posting a new dev diary soon, the first dev diary from Ari! :)

Release date: 2017

We first created The Lighthouse almost 3 years ago in January of 2014 as a simple 2d point-and-click thriller game. Because we designed and built it in under 48hrs, we had to keep our vision and scope limited.

Like most developers, we figured we would redo the whole thing one day and give it the time and energy it deserved. We are proud to say that The Lighthouse is being re-imagined and fully rebuilt using Unreal Engine 4.

Our goal is to tell a unique short story through the perspective of the character. To achieve this, we are switching from point-and-click to a First Person persepctive. We will give the player the ability to explore and interact with the world in 3d, and should the player have the equipment, they can become fully immersed using their HMD set of choice ( Oculus Rift, Vive, etc.).

The Story

The game, "The Lighthouse" takes place February 19, 1964. You play as Irvine, a former detective turned private investigator in the state of Maine. Irvine's life is typical for someone who solves problems that the city doesn't have the inclination to follow up on or solve. In doing so, many lucrative cases that would come to his office are from locals, usually fulfilling requests to shadow couples looking to expose infidelity or business owners asking Irvine to gather enough evidence to incriminate a business partner.

February 19th is an important anniversary for Irvine, as it was the day he lost his first born, Lily, to cancer 7 years before. Every year, he would visit her, place a pink lily and lit candle on her gravestone and watch it burn until it was extinguished. This tradition had never been broken, until today. As Irvine began to pack and leave his office, candle in hand, he noticed a letter slide underneath his door.

The letter was marked "Irvine" and inside it read:

"Mr. Irvine,

My daughter hasn't come home for 2 years, 4 months and 9 days. You see, she's missing. She was involved in the old lighthouse incident, you may remember her name- Lily. I've asked the local authorities to look for her, but they haven't got a clue. They tell me horrible things that no parent should hear. They tell me to accept that she may have died. Worst, they tell me they can't help. I can't sleep until I know where she is, if she's safe, if she's scared, if she's trying to come home but can't find home. Help me find her. Look for her at the Lighthouse, as that was her last known location.

Inside the envelope was an address and a pink lily.
