Description
Can death be sleep, when life is but a dream,
And scenes of bliss pass as a phantom by?


Compose a still life... A place between life and dream.

RŌA is a cryptic single-player first-person play on awareness and fugacity, where you descend into a restful dream-like state visually dealing with questions of life.

What is a good state of consciousness? Why are we truly doing what we are doing? Since we are an observer of our experience, rather than our story, we don't need to find out. Otherwise, we live, as we dream - beyond reality.

Gameplay
The object of the play is simple: the Player creates the colors by changing the position and angle. Whilst in many games the beings are eliminated by clicks, in RŌA you put them at rest or awake them again. This sometimes also induces some side effects in a certain order. In the end no two players will ever be able to create exactly the same picture. Any best way depends solely on the eye of the beholder. There is no time limit and it is impossible to get hurt or die.

While emotions can coexist they often wipe each other out. As humor or plain thrill will detract from certain subjects, thought and sense are their big parts. Are you open to the uncommon, in wonder watching the stars and chaos, maybe going to museums sometimes? Then the game might be notable for you.

The journey is the destination here, a challenge not everyone is ready for. The player has to move playfully to create appealing and mesmerizing pictures and moods. One has to attentively hunt or catch the moment to see something splendid appear. That's simple, but hard to achieve.

Controls
Classic Mouse&Keyboard or any gamepad to walk and look around. The Screen stays HUD-free. One Button is referring to Rest or Awake creatures, another is to clear the screen by Scanning for them, or Slows their motions when held. One trigger is Shooting a still life, saving the screen. Button Four retrieves and manages your current pinacotheca of "saved" screens. Your shots can be uploaded to a three-dimensional walkable art exhibition companion website hosting the visitor curated best 33 player stills (and further randomly) with their respective author's name.

On Greenlight
The current build can be found on itch.io and GameJolt. If RŌA gets greenlit we will be implementing the graphics options Easy, Normal, Excessive, but primarily we will be working on a vastly revised version (around factor 4) with further encounters, places, poetry, different colors, different shapes.

Many thanks for all the comments and support. Some bright inspirations involved, and some cliches. We may reflect on them in a way now in full production mode. As we adore the medium, we try to extend its taxonomy a bit here. Instead of serving the primal instincts, we are looking behind the dream wall, portraying a lost society's destinations by its ethereal remnants, dissolving the red line between artists and beholder to a degree. Ultimately the game is about skilling visual composition, something one may use in the real world once in a while.

Its an LSD trip simulator. And if you cant take criticism of ALL forms, then maybe you shouldnt be a game dev.

Hey cool, RŌA's been greenlit, congratulations !

Past the occasional rude words, I can understand what some people were saying here about this project "lacking a scenario", or "needing more substance" :
I will definitely enjoy it as the wandering/shaping experience it is meant to be, but another part of me, - the one that likes psychedelic sci-fi and listens to stoner rock -, is longing for a more customary, narrative approach as well.
RŌA's forms could accomodate a pop-er story very well indeed. Its color palettes look gorgeous, and the whole environment looks immersive and daunting. There are lots of possibilities here, and you soon start filling the gap with exotic personal expectations...

I mean, that 2001-fed teenager in me would have enjoyed a hallucinatory conversation with those ghostly shapes. Low cost ? Don't sulk your pleasure. Really, that would be like a long-awaited, next-level, Captain Blood experience.

Anyway, I'll be there for the release !
