As for not knowing what to do, I don't think that's too much of an issue. The button room makes it pretty clear your only choice is to try out a button and doing do directs you to one room or another. Some basic experiementation should make it clear what is going on.
If I knew my way around Hammer, I'd edit the map to make the placement of glyphs more obvious to explain more clearly what effected what, but the limitations of the in-game editor means the glyphs tend to lose their meaning in a complex setup like this map.
It's an interesting experiment in logic control using angle panels and lasers though.
