Artificer Greenlit!
Development Review: Multiplayer Online Matches
Reviewing the development focus of Artificer

Hello everyone,

Thank you all for the support and feedback first and foremost. It has been a pleasure to read.

I have been planning and reviewing the next steps of Artificer's development process alongside audience feedback.

Originally following this week I created a plan to implement simple functionality for multiplayer and LAN which would play similar to the single player game: short ~3 minute matches. After this I would continue to work on the singleplayer game features.

Following Greenlight

What seems to have most of your attention is the multiplayer online as well as LAN matches. If I spend a substantial amount of time writing 'contracts' for single player missions and creating more and more complex AI this will take me away from producing the best multiplayer (online and LAN) experiance I can.

Refining Artificer

I plan to drop the singleplayer side of Artificer and put all my attention in multiplayer matches. The game won't be online or multiplayer only, these arena battles can be created locally and played with AI.

To summarize arena battles:
  • When selecting a server, the player will pick one ship from a selection of presets to start a match with following a different play style.
  • Either team (assuming only two teams at the moment) will have a central station (will be large) on either side of the map. These will be HQs and fill out every task requirement (more info later) the destruction of this station will result in failure.
  • (stretch goal?) Team members can set up small specialized station on the map given its scale to fulfil a requirement task. Refine materials, player spawn points, ship garages.
  • (stretch goal?) Small AI ships from either side will fulfil tasks or just assault the nearest enemy or follow a friendly.
  • Space segment will be littered with hostile and indifferent NPCs (pirates, traders, cargo ships) these ships will has small caches of very valuable material.
  • different map types, one may require capture of points where others may require destroying the enemy
  • more is planned, but will be explored further in development.

Please be aware that I am interested in your opinion of this, would you rather this than the current contracts? Would you be unhappy if singleplayer was just multiplayer with bots?

Thank you for reading!

Description
Release date: Fourth quarter 2016
Artificer is a top-down 2D space shooter for PC. It is a competitive shooter – multiplayer or single player – in an arena setting or with simple objectives (e.g. destroy or defend stations, and capture points). Freely customize your ship with the ship editor or build a completely new ship to your own specifications and watch your enemy crafts break apart and drift into space blown apart by a selection of plethora of weapons available to you. Manoeuvre and defend yourself with energy shield modules to ensure you do not share a similar fate, or even use warp capability to instantly transport from one part of space to the other.

Key Features
• Ships are a collection of ship components that are entirely customizable with user friendly in-game ship editor interfaces.
• Three-tiered progression component rosters with different functionality that enable for versatile ship builds.
• Tactical or skill based combat system dependant on the individual ship build.
• Location based damage system, each component is able to withstand limited damage. Once enough damage has accumulated the piece will be destroyed and drift away.
• Mine resources to construct ships, these can be gained from destroying drifting components and asteroid that litter space.
• Single player and multiplayer combat

Will be unable to have a matchmaker before being greenlit it seems.

Possibly have some form of direct connect for the demo.

please be sure to follow DTDigital of Facebook as I will be updating progress of servers and clients there.

I suppose Star Farer has a different mechanic than this. This looks more like an arena-ish type game. I think it has potential, its just a matter of gameplay for me if I can get into it or not. I mean Star Farer, or now Star Sector, has a unique and interesting gameplay style. I'm curious how this one is.

Thanks for the comments guys,

been busy creating a matchmaker for the game. Considering creating a demo for the multiplayer with matchmaking with a basic version of the matches while waiting for greenlight.

Looks like a weird reassembly clone..not saying it's a bad idea, but I don't think it'd be for me :P
