State of the game - February 2017
The Anubis cruiser, aka the Community Ship

The main art work was focused on creating our largest ship yet, the Anubis cruiser. Thanks to discussions on Steam or on Twitter, we could make design decisions based on community feedback. The result is a very impressive ship that can handle large fleets by itself - provided you can afford it.Let's see some pictures !

Art work is now focused on a new environment, in the area called Night's Home. This area is home to one of the game's biggest factions, Ghost Works Shipyards, and we want to make such places feel special. The largest faction, Nema Heavy Works, already has a big space station of its own...

Contracts

We are working very hard on a procedural quest system. We call these small quests contracts, and we expect them to be one of the main gameplay features when you're not busy creating your empire. In particular, the contract system will be the main source of revenue to fighter pilots, by chasing down pirates or attacking enemy shipments.

The quest menu has been fully revamped for this occasion.

When is it coming out ?

When it's ready ! We're still targeting Q2 2017. In the words of Shigeru Miyamoto - "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.".

See you soon !

Helium Rain combat gameplay
Combat system

The combat gameplay is all but done. We've made it challenging and realistic, here are some highlights.

  • Fully Newtonian model : if you want to brake, you need to turn around and accelerate.
  • Localized damage : you can disable a ship's propulsion by shooting the engine, or cut off the ship's power by destroying reactors. You can disarm it, strand it, disable it, or plainly destroy it.
  • There is no speed limit, and speed had an effect on your weapon's efficiency - your gun shells will have more energy when fired from a ship flying at 400m/s !
  • Artillery shells implement complex behavior, like minimum-distance detection, or shrapnel ammunition. This technology makes our capital ships extremely lethal
  • Bombs are a great way to attack stations or large, slow ships. They are just bombs, without any guidance, so successful bombing is an art :)

You have various ships at your disposal in Helium Rain, from the small shuttle to heavy battleships.

Capital ships

Capital ships default to automatic fighting. Gun turrets will automatically pick up targets and shoot them down. But the dedicated ship-destroyer can also enter the fire director mode, where a group of turrets will fire at your command, leaving the ship's piloting to AI.

AI ships

Of course, this brings us to our AI enemies. Our AI is particularly capable : it can navigate asteroid fields at the speed of sound while hurling gun shells at your predicted, future location. We're pretty proud of it. It's also quite good at swarm fighting - just watch our collision avoidance demo here.

AI ships can also fight alongside you, and they can of course be neutrals as well. Seing freighters flee like a flock of birds is especially amusing !

Strategic AI

This is a more obscure, but extremely important item. In helium Rain, you play as a company, and other companies exist as well - all of them bigger than you. The strategic AI is what makes those companies trade resources, plan diplomatic ties or military actions. They also act as the bones of the game's economy, so we want to make sure AI companies are initially helpful to the player, and increasingly hostile if you don't play nice.

Our economic model is even more realistic than our combat system, and part of our latest work was focused on making this a reality. See our previous announcement for more on this subject !

We're moving on to implementing quests, exploration, and technology progress. We now plan on releasing Helium Rain in Q2 2017. we understand that it's still a long time away, but we believe it will be worth it. Nobody wants yet another unfinished space sim rushed to the market, right ? ;)

Thanks for reading !

Description
Release date: Q3 2017
A realistic space opera for PC
Explore the vast emptiness of space. Take command of your ships, create your empire.
Helium Rain is a realistic space simulation game.

  • Fly any ship of your fleet, including fighters, freighters or capital ships.
  • Do as you please, whether you want to become a wealthy merchant or a fierce pilot.
  • Customize your ship, change your equipment, buy new gear.

Hard Sci-fi
We want to build a world that feels real. Your ships have generators, radiators, weapons, engines, cargo bays or life support systems - they all work together. Every thruster on your ship plays a role. Aim for engines to pin down your enemies, or send them spinning around by destroying power stations. Most of our ships have more than thirty individual parts !

One planet, many enemies
The massive gas giant Nema is your new home. The planet is a near-infinite source of fuel, her orbits a swarm of asteroids, her irradiated moons a silent threat. Helium Rain gives you an empire to build, but you will need to claim it for yourself, and defend it against your competitors. It's up to you to decide if you will trade resources, start wars, or just avoid trouble.

Customization
You can customize the most important parts of your ships - your main engines, attitude control thrusters and weapons. You can choose your colors, and of course, you can fly every ship in the game.

PC graphics
Helium Rain is built with Unreal Engine 4 and targets the most powerful gaming rigs. The game will ship with support for 4K rendering, supersampling, high-quality shading and post-processing effects.

We're now targeting Q3 for the release of the game. While we will have finished most of the game in May, we feel like the end-game progression is lacking without the technology progression system we want to have.

Since we are bad at giving dates, we're not going to give one, but we're aiming for July now.

You can rest assured that we are working super hard. Check out Twitter account for real-time progress : https://twitter.com/HeliumRain

We're not simulating propellant. We wanted to initially, but we didn't want the player to get stranded, so that didn't make it in the game after all. It's not that ships don't use any, it's just not a gameplay mechanic, as we astract the orbital navigation.

will there be propelant limits? or are we assuming hyperefficent drives, or, god fobid, reactionless drives?

@c704710

I can't actually get my head around the fact you are upset or have an issue with the Author saying PC.

Your very own Linux, for example, is installed on a " PC ",... you must be one of them that thinks Linux is a superior OS and loves to brag and make it clear that people know what you run.

Linux is a nice OS in some respects,... However, It's not superior.
Stranger  [author] Dec 15, 2016 @ 2:49am
@c704710 - We will ship the game on Windows and Linux. "PC" is a shorter way of saying that.
