Slimelord's Guide to Void Expanse (WIP)

This guide is intended to introduce players to the benefits from the different classes and provide a walkthrough to Void Expanse. All Quest Exp and Money values are averaged from multiple runs, without any Exp/Money Boosts unlocked.

Please Like/Favorite the guide, tell your friends about it if they need help. Feel free to leave a comment if you find any information has become innacurate over time due to updating or if there is more information you would like to see added.

Package for a Banshee

Available from the start, you must complete this quest to leave the starting sector.

Find Scurvy the Pirate, he will be marked on your map by a yellow box. There will also be a yellow marker on your minimap to show you which direction he is in.
3 ways to do this quest:
  • Kill him and take the package from his cold dead hands. +151 xp
  • Pay him 500d for the package(not really worth it). -500d +250 xp
  • Talk him into giving you the package by calling him out on his lie. +250 xp
Optional:
Kill him after obtaining the package(I know you want to). +151 xp
Return the package to Joe. +500 xp and Banshee(1 Ballistic/Energy I, 1 Energy I, 1 Consumable, 2 Boosters, 1 Device; 1300 Structure, 5 Armor, 100 Cargo, +20% Target Def, +10% Maneuvering, +10% Warp Recharge Speed)

Mining for Consumables
One-Eyed Joe
Difficulty
Available after "Package for a Banshee"

This quest will start immediately after Package for a Banshee. You have to trade 50 pieces of Glepsite Ore to Joe.
You can either mine, loot or purchase the ore.
Civilian Shuttle Works better than the Banshee for Mining the ore due to the larger cargo capacity.
Giving Joe the 50 ore will reward you with +500 xp and 5 Structure Repair Consumables.

You must locate and hack the Terminal located in the system.
It's marked on your map with a yellow diamond symbol.
The Hacking Minigame seems to be strongly based off of RNG. The goal is to access the nodes it presents and create a yellow path between them. After several tests it appears every node you access has roughly 50% chance to succeed which will draw a yellow line to an adjacent successful node. This chance appears to increase with hacking proficiency. Just avoid the red nodes and try again until you get it. I will continue to study patterns in an attempt to find an actual solution to the hacking minigame.
After hacking it and returning to Joe you are rewarded with +500 xp.
Hacking it before starting this quest will also grant +500 xp after talking to Joe.

Locate and eliminate the Pirate LT located in the system marked by a yellow box(He moves around the map, so the objective marker on your minimap may prove more useful).
The ship type and equipment loadout of the LT vary based primarily on the sectors difficulty lvl.
Take care in engaging the LT as nearby pirates will also try to attack you if they get too close.
Killing the Pirate LT rewards you with xp based on the system level.
Return to the Station Commander for your reward.

Order Faction Quests Part 1, Capital Sector
Military Station


Join Order
Sgt. Ragnar

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Order and no faction affiliation.

In order to complete this quest you must successfully complete at least 4 quests from other Order Questgivers.
Upon returning to Sgt. Ragnar after completing the quests you will be admitted into the Order Faction and granted access to the Order Endgame Quests.
You will also be rewarded with +5000xp and entry into Order Faction.
Ragnar will also give you an Order Themed Crab.

Mercenary Crime
Officer Coldridge
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Order.

Talk to Sgt. Ragnar and ask about Judds case, then return to Coldridge to ask about his recording of the event.
Access the Public Terminal to analyze the recording.
Analyze the Structure, then the Headers, then repair the file and confront Coldridge.
You can now either turn in the quest to Ragnar or Coldridge, each with their own rewards.
Sgt. Ragnar rewards you with +750xp and a boost to Freedom Rep.
Officer Coldridge rewards you with +1500xp +500d +1 Order Rec and Bonus Rep.

Science Station


Rats in the Cellar
Officer Threepwood

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Order.

He will ask you to Jettison rats into space.
You can accept the mission or reject helping him, the latter will automatically fail the mission and prevent you from doing it again.
After purging the rats you have the option to tell him one of two things.
  • Overexaggerate the situation for +250xp +250d.
  • Tell him there were no rats for no reward.

Catch Drug Dealers
Officer Threepwood
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Order.

Hunt Drug Smugglers.
Speak to Merchant Vessels outside the station and ask them if you could buy drugs from them, they will offer you some, you'll reveal your true intentions and they will engage you in combat.
Killing them rewards you with +0xp as they are still technically a merchant.
Return to Officer Threepwood for your reward. +1500xp +1500d +1 Order Rec and Bonus Rep.
WARNING: Do NOT talk to a merchant who is about to enter a station or jumpgate, they may stay in the station indefinitely or disappear completely.

Hack the Device
Scientist Rosco

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Order.

Here's a breakdown of the commands:
kstat shows you the Kernal Statistics, in this case, you won't need it.
ls shows you the current list of directories and permissions for the current directory.
cd allows you to change directories, in this case only between the main 3.
chmod allows you to change permissions for the current directory.
cp copies the current directory, end goal is to copy the archive, but you lack the permissions initially.
rm removes the current directory, don't do this, it will lead to failure.
The idea behind it is to find a weakness in the security and exploit it.
The ls command is useful in this as it shows the permissions of each group.
Permissions overview:
As a user and not a owner or group, the number that matters is the one on the far right.

What do the numbers mean? Glad you asked.
0 - No permissions
1 - Can Execute the File
2 - Can Write the File
3 - Can Write or Execute the File
4 - Can Read the File
5 - Can Read or Execute the File
6 - Can Read or Write the File
7 - Can do whatever the **** they want.

After you have completed the hack, turn in the quest to Scientist Rosco for +2000d +3500xp +1 Order Rec and Bonus Rep.

Whistler's Gun

Whistler will give you 4000d to purchase a weapon in a sector he specifies, when you arrive the weapon will actually cost 5000d.
Do NOT mention Whistler or any information regarding the original price to the broker, you will fail the mission.
You can inform Whistler about the price change upon returning to get an extra +1000d.
Purchase the weapon and return to Whistler for +2000xp +1 Order Rec and Bonus Rep.
Order Faction Quests Part 2, Outer Sectors
Persuade Reporter
Officer Kolosov
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Order.

You have to persuade Nico Davidson in the Order Capital Sector to stop slandering the Order.
He will be located in the Outpost Station.
You can pay him 5000d or if you have the persuade skill, just talk him out of writing about the Order.
Return to Officer Kolosov for you reward. +1000d +2500xp +1 Order Rec and Bonus Rep.

Kidnappers
Officer Gorth
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Order.

You have to confront kidnappers in the sector and convince them you're a Slaver.
Upon arriving they will ask you what took so long, then for the password. There is no right answer.
Kill the pirates, rescue the hostage, then return to the station and talk to Gorth for your reward. +1000d +2500xp +1 Order Rec and Bonus Rep.

Building Bridges
Officer Aims
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Order.

Aims will send you to check up on his brother in the Freedom Capital Sector.
His brother is Mercenary Aims located within the Outpost Station.
Ensure you call him a liar and a traitor so you don't blow his cover.
Return to Officer Aims for your reward. +500d +1500xp +1 Order Rec and Bonus Rep.
Order Faction Quests Part 3, Endgame
Duties
Sgt. Ragnar/General Troyden

Available after you have joined the Order Faction.

Speak to Sgt Ragnar and he will direct you to meet General Troyden. The Restricted area will now be available for entry.
Speak to General Troyden and he will send you to find Barrich and obtain a method to accessing the jumpgates leading into Xengatarn Space.

Return to Troyden after obtaining the Jumpgate Signal Amplifier for your reward. +2500exp +2000d

Freedom Faction Quests Part 1, Capital Sector
Business Station


Join Freedom
Mercenary Headknot

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Freedom and no faction affiliation.

In order to complete this quest you must successfully complete at least 4 quests from other Freedom Questgivers.
Upon returning to Mercenary Headknot after completing the quests you will be admitted into the Freedom Faction and granted access to the Freedom Endgame Quests.
Upon completion Headknot will grant you +5000xp and entry into Freedom Faction.
Headknot will also give you a Freedom themed Orca.

Business Rivalry
Fence Garret
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Freedom.

Garret wants you to sell secret data to Kobb, another fence and business rival.
You can complete this quest by helping either Kobb or Garret.
  • Help Garret If you have the persuade skill, you can get him to pay you 2000d for the data drive. Otherwise, sell it for 500d
  • Help Kobb he will plant the data drive in Garret's Quarters
    Report to the Station Commander about the stolen data drive.
    He will ask you to come back later, the search will take a couple of minutes in real time.
    Upon returning to the Commander for the results, you will receive +500d +500xp.
    Return to Garret or Kobb for your reward.
    Garret +500d +1000xp
    Kobb +1000xp +1 Freedom Rec

Mining Station


Hacking Order
Mercenary Roth
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Freedom.

Freedom Faction Quests Part 2, Outer Sectors
Alien Eyes
Mechanic Sheldon

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Freedom.

Guessing the transmitters are of Xengatarn Origin will grant an additional +100xp.
The Transmitters will not be marked on your map, but will still have minimap compass markers to them.
Upon activating them, you will be attacked by Xengatarn Ships.
Note: The Organs obtained from the Xengatarn ships can be used to help with another quest "Not Enough Guts" in Fanatic Space.
Upon completion, you will be rewarded with +1500xp +1500d +1 Freedom Rec and Bonus Rep.

Batto's Friend
Mercenary Batto

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Freedom.

Locate Mercenary Batto's Friend, he will be marked on the starmap.
After talking with Declan you must return to Batto to retrieve a repair kit for him.
You can either tell Batto the truth about what happened with the cargo or lie, it doesnt seem to have any impact on the quest.
Upon returning to Declan, he will be under attack by Xengatarn ships, destroy them and talk to Declan to give him the repair kit.
Note: The Organs obtained from the Xengatarn ships can be used to help with another quest "Not Enough Guts" in Fanatic Space.
Returning to Batto will reward you with +1500xp +1000d +1 Freedom Rec and Bonus Rep.

Protect Boris
Mercenary Ricco
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Freedom and the Persuasion Skill.

Go to the location designated and talk to Boris to learn more about his situation.
He will update your map with the location of the Order Thugs.
Go to the location and speak with their leader Officer Valente.
You can either kill him or find more information on him from the Public Terminals in Order Space.
Killing him will give negative rep to Order.
Gathering information will reveal that Officer Valente is dead and is being impersonated by a pirate, this will also grant +250xp
Return to Valente to confront and kill him.

Report back to Boris to inform him of what transpired. +1500d
Report back to Ricco to be rewarded with +1500xp +1000d +1 Freedom Rec and Bonus Rep.
Freedom Faction Quests Part 3, Endgame
Business Station


Special Task
Mercenary Headknot/Salek Jeredan

Available if you have Joined Freedom.

Speak to Headknot and he will direct you to go talk to Salek, this will open up access to the restricted area. Go talk to Salek.
Salek will send you to find Barrich and obtain a method to accessing the jumpgates leading into Xengatarn Space.
See Barrich questline below. (You can select the section from the Table of contents on the right.)
Return to Salek after obtaining the Jumpgate Signal Amplifier for your reward. +3000exp +3000d

Your Plan/Condensors
Salek Jeredan
Difficulty
Available after Special Task.

Salek will tell you of a damaged jumpgate capable of returning you to the Core System.
The jumpgate is damaged and requires you to obtain 15 Ergrek Gravity Condensers from Xengatarn Space.
Make sure your ship is as beefy as it can get before this one, this quest can be extremely difficult. The condensers will be marked on your map when you enter the areas, they will not spawn in areas cleared of Hives prior to this quest.
After obtaining all 15, return to Salek for your reward. +3000d +5000exp

Next Task/Ancient Jumpgate
Salek Jeredan
Difficulty
Available after Condensors.
-------------------------------------------------------
Speak to Salek, tell him you're ready. He will direct you to assist his Engineer, Presley, in the repairs of the Warp Gate.
When you arrive in the designated area, a Xengatarn Hunter will spawn that you must kill in order to progress in the quest.
After killing the hunter, proceed to the jump gate to speak to presley. Several Xengatarn ships will appear and attack, you must protect Presley until his work finishes.
After eliminating the Xengatarn ships, speak to Presley.
He will give you the option of returning to Jeredan or leaving with him.
Returning to Jeredan.
Presley will stay there and calibrate the Jumpgate while you return to Jeredan.
Speak to Jeredan for your reward. +20000 Exp +20000d

Leave now.
This will unlock the Solo Ending Achievement and start the next cycle.

Final Mission/Exodus
Salek Jeredan
Difficulty
Available after Ancient Jumpgate.

Jeredan is gathering a massive fleet to meet you near the Jumpgate to return to the Core System.
Meet Jeredan and his fleet in the designated sector. Speak to Jeredan and he will inform you that his military fleets are too spread out to aid the civilians escape.
You are now required to protect as many civilian ships as possible. Keep wiping out the approaching Xengatarn Ships until you are prompted to speak with Jeredan.
Return to Jeredan and leave the Void Expanse, Earning you the Victory of Freedom Achievement.
Befriend the Fanatics
Unmarked Quest- Befriending the Fanatics
Broker Mannis

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Freedom.

Bring 2 Alien Relics to Broker Mannis.
The Relics can be found in most systems guarded by a powerful Pirate Hammer, it will be marked on your map as a yellow dot with a red dot close by.
See the Tips and Tricks Section for methods to obtaining the relics at low levels.
Upon returning with 2 relics he will reward you with +150 Fanatics Reputation, thus allowing you to enter Fanatic Space.
Fanatics Faction Quests Part 1, Capital Sector
Science Station


Join Fanatics
Guardian Dostan
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Fanatics and no faction affiliation.

In order to complete this quest you must successfully complete at least 4 quests from other Fanatic Questgivers and ask them for help with the questions.
Upon returning to Guardian Dostan after completing the quests you will be admitted into the Fanatics Faction and granted access to the Fanatics Endgame Quests.

Not Enough Guts
Brother Jebodiah

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Fanatics.

You must bring him 3 Xengatarn Organs obtained from killing Xengatarn Ships.
Most locations that have Xengatarn have a high combat level making it difficult to complete this quest, however, if you held onto the Xengatarn Organs dropped during "Alien Eyes", "Save the Prophet" and/or "Batto's Friend", you can complete this quest immediately.
Giving the guts to Jebodiah will reward you with +1500xp +1500d and Bonus Rep.
You can now also ask him for help with the 4 questions to join the Fanatics.

Mining Station


Poisoning

You are tasked with persuading Brother Portridge in Order Space to drink the Poison Potion.
When you arrive, you can:
  • Poison Brother Portridge.
  • Reveal the reason you are there. +1000xp

    • Tell him what you did.
    • Lie to him(requires Persuasion skill). +1000xp +1000d and Bonus Rep
You can now also ask him for help with the 4 questions to join the Fanatics.

Outpost Station


Lost Artifact
Brother Maverick
Difficulty
Available if you have Friendly Standing with Fanatics.

Locate the remains of the men Maverick sent to recover the Ergrek Artifact.
Each wreckage located will grant 500xp.
The First 2 will spawn in random locations on the outskirts of the map, the 3rd will spawn almost on top of the star in the middle of the map making it likely to die during this mission, make sure you arent carrying anything valuable before attempting to reach the last wreckage.
Upon Reporting to Maverick, you will be rewarded with +2000xp +1000d and Bonus Rep.
You can now also ask him for help with the 4 questions to join the Fanatics.
Fanatics Faction Quest Part 2, Outer Sectors
Save the Prophet

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Fanatics.

Locate and speak with Tobby, his location will be marked in the starmap.
After speaking with him, he will self-destruct and 2 Xengatarn ships will appear and attack.

Available if you have Friendly Standing with Fanatics.

You are tasked with scanning at least 5 planets with a scanner device given to you by Luke, make sure to equip the device before you leave the station.
Return to him after scanning the planets for +1500xp +1000d and Bonus Rep.
You can now also ask him for help with the 4 questions to join the Fanatics.

Every Faction Quest, Meet Barrich
This Questline is part of every faction, but can also be completed prior to joining a faction.

Energy Source
Barrich
Difficulty
Available anytime.

Barrich will give you a scanner and ask you to find a Nharmian Energy Source.
The energy source will be located in a sector marked on your starmap.
When you reach the sector, using the scanner Barrich gave you will tell you the distance to the target, use it as you are moving whenever it comes off cooldown to help you adjust the direction you are heading to find the energy source.
After finding the energy source, return to Barrich.
You will be rewarded with the Jumpgate Signal Amplifier.
You may now enter Xengatarn Space.
If you have a Faction, you may return to them now for your reward and next quest.
Research Points(RP) Values
This Section will explain the Research Point(RP) Values for every Alien Organ/Artifact.

  • Xengatarn Organs
    These Organs are worth 2 RP each:
    Whereas these are worth 3 RP each:

  • Ergrek Artifacts
    Small, Medium and Large Artifacts are all worth 10 RP Each.

    Alien Relics with Carvings cannot be traded for RP as they are quest related items.

Just do the first missions and you'll get this one.

Complete the tutorial from start to finish.
There's several tutorials found in the game, just make sure you don't disable them.
The only easily missed tutorial is the one for equipping Missiles.

There's at least one Steam group for this, but you can usually get it by jumping on random servers.

Impossible
Kill an enemy 75 Levels higher than you.
This achievement can be done with the help of another player, the high level player weakens the target and you simply finish it off.
[Untested] You may also be able to get this achievement from killing a player 75 levels higher than you. (If I could get some confirmation on this it would be much appreciated.)

Tough Stuff
Kill an enemy with less than 100 hull remaining on your ship.
Get some good guns/shields, run into asteroids to drop your health(may take a couple tries), then just go kill a weak pirate.

Quick Judgement
Kill at least one Xengatarn Ship
Don't worry, you get plenty of opportunities to do this.

Not Fun
Die 10 times
Flying into the sun works good for this.

Boom!
Deal 5000 damage in a single hit
Launch a nuke at a group of pirates/aliens/merchants/miners/etc.

Shiny!
Have 99999 or more money
Trading and mining are the best ways to make money.

Loot a crate
Loot a crate
Just grapple anything that remains after you blow up an enemy with the F key.

Drilling Billy
Perform 100 mining cycles.
Equipping multiple mining drills and a better generator will speed this up a bit.

Play for 24 Hours or more total

Beat the game on Hardcore mode
Don't attempt this until you have a good grasp of what you're doing.

Tips and Tricks
General Tips
  • Complete the prerequisite quests for every faction before joining one to gain valuable Exp and money.
  • Starting as the Trader or Prospector is the easiest way to make money faster.
  • Mining and Trading will earn you money and Exp, but Trading can earn far more in less time.
  • If you obtain a Jumpgate Signal Booster before you have joined a faction, try to avoid clearing every area as you may make yourself unable to finish the game.

Obtaining Alien Relics at low levels.
  • "Fly-by" method: Pass the relic and Pirate Hammer at cruise speed, and attempt to grapple the container. If you do not successfully open it, adjust your trajectory and try again. Keep in mind that the F key is not only used to grapple but also to empty the contents into your inventory if you get close enough to open it, so spam that button!
  • "Distracted" Method: If you are in a territory with friendly ships(Miners, Merchants, Patrols), you can attempt to lure the Pirate Hammer into combat with one of these ships and take the loot uncontested.
  • "I Don't Want Any!" Method: If you have high enough engineering lvl, you can also use an EMP device to disable the Hammer for a few seconds giving you time to open the container and take the artifacts without having to fight.
  • "Follow Me And Die" Method: Pilot a ship with a lot of mines and lead the Hammer around in a circle deploying them, it can take quite a lot of mines to do this, however most ships can outrun the hammer and it tends to follow blindly behind them until you leave the aggro range.

Planet Scanner Exp Farming
To obtain the Planet Scanner you must have a good relationship with the Fanatics and start the quest "Scanning Planets"
The Planet Scanner grants you Increasing Exp based on the number of planets scanned with it.
The planets are shown on your map, but not your minimap, however, you can set waypoints on top of the planets shown in your map to both keep track of pre-scanned planets as well as locate them via minimap.
As the scanner benefits you from scanning more planets, larger galaxies allows for more scans to be made and thus, more exp to be obtained.

Ally with the freedom faction and follow their questline all the way until you repair the Jumpgate,
Presley will offer you a chance to leave now or see Jeredan, take the chance to leave now and you will be rewarded with the Victory of You achievement.

To get the solo victory, join Freedom but when you fix the jumpgate, leave instead of going back to Salek.

Solo Endgame doesn't seem to do anything. I painstakingly wiped out all the aliens (other than the undefeatable without a special weapon base) and nothing happened when the last Hive fell. I am not part of any faction.
