Space is more fun with friends! Darkfield is a mission driven CO-OP space dogfighting game with support for the Oculus Rift.

We have been funded on Kickstarter and Greenlit!

Darkfield supports standard monitors, multi-screen setups, TrackIR and the Oculus Rift

Be part of an elite squad with unique ships and special abilities. Team up with your wingmans, fight enemy pilots, protect civilian convoys and take down big space

Darkfield combines modern mission-based CO-OP gameplay with the flair and setting of old space operas.

Choose one of 4 elite fighter pilots, each with special skills and unique ships. You are hired guns, doing the dirty work for the military deep behind enemy lines.

One of the co-op missions is to blow up a space station! It is heavily enforced, has a powerful shield and is guarded by squadrons of fighters. Flying in guns blazing just wouldn't do the job. Your squad has an experimental EMP device. Use it to disable the stations shield. Fire off nuclear missiles to blast a hole into the hull of the station, fly in, destroy the core and ride the shockwave back out! This is the kind of gameplay Darkfield is all about!

Other than taking down space stations, you will be escorting civilian fleets through disputed space, hold off waves of attackers and rob military convoys.

The release version of Darkfield will also have a small explorative singleplayer experience, which will explain the history of the conflict you are fighting in.

In our Multiplayer TDM mode, you will be piloting 6 unique ships. Our current pre-release build includes a heavy bomber-class with slow movements and big guns, a mid-range-ship with balanced properties and a small, fast shop with direct controls. Each class has it's own advantages and the unique physics properties will provide a different experience for every ship.

We feel like games are the most fun when they can be played with your friends. Fighting together side by side, taking down enemy stations and coordinating attacks over shortwave radio creates such a strong sense of presence and achievement, it is just too good to pass up!

  • Multiple Co-Operative Game Modes
  • integrated Holodeck Singleplayer Experience
  • unique Ship Types with Special Abilities and Weapons
  • Free-Roam through Space Stations and Ships
  • Online and LAN - there is no online-DRM and we also provide a dedicated Server
  • Single-band, single-channel short wave radios, basically Walkie Talkies in Space, make communicating with your friends a challenge by itself
  • Support for Windows 7 and higher, OSX and Linux, 64bit versions required
  • Oculus Rift Support and planned support for upcoming devices such as CastAR and Samsung's GearVR

Download the singleplayer TDM prototype for Windows and MacOSX. It works on standard monitors, TrackIR-setups, and the Oculus RIft DK1 and DK2

The final game will also be released on Linux! Due current Oculus Rift SDK limitations, it does not work with the Rift DK2. This is just temporary and we will provide DK2 Linux builds as soon as possible.

Our prototype covers the basic team deathmatch game mode, one ship and one map. Back us and receive Early Alpha Access to more ships, maps and Multiplayer.

We are working closely together with our friends from "Syndrone". We will use the Kickstarter funds to create a custom fast-paced OST.

As fans of orchestrated electro beats and epic film scores, we envision an epic mix half way between Battlestar Galactica and Daft Punk which will be synchronized to the space battles.

Tom's Hardware:"... with a little more money and polish Darkfield VR could seriously give EVE Valkyrie a run for its money."

Kotaku: " combat and giant mech-killing will settle in as the bread-and-better of virtual reality headsets"

RoadToVR: "Clearly the team have had fun as the detail evident is lovingly attended. Even the player’s helmet has fine scratches on the visor’s glass."

TheRiftArcade: "...mind-blowing first person perspective as spacecraft, debris and explosions rip past the cockpit." "...zooming through space wearing the Oculus Rift is as thrilling as we’ve always imagined."

EnterTheRift: "We almost feel like we are in fireworks sometimes."

VirtualRealityReviewer: "Darkfield VR is a great experience..." "...more amazing is that such a small indie team are creating such an ambitious game and are delivering the quality seen in this Alpha build."

checkyourscreen: "Darkfield VR, is the brainchild of the infinitely talented chaps in VR Bits." "[...] I was able to live out my Star Wars dreams. DarkField VR is fantastic looking, lovingly put together and a feast for the senses."

VR Bits is an independent German-Australian Game Studio by

Mark, Daniel and Martin

We have quite diverse backgrounds. While Mark was working on medical applications, Daniel was into video recording and editing. Martin has been creating professional 3d models for the use in architecture visualization. We founded our studio because we love space games and we had faith in the future of new technologies such as the Oculus Rift. We have been working on VR ever since.
Today's achievement driven, linear level designed, e-sport focused, competitive gaming scene bored us, so we started working on gameplay experiences that are as easy and quick to get in to, as when we were playing with our N64's.
For us, gaming is about having fun with friends, not the skill level, the size of your wallet for in-game content or invested grinding time.
